R&R x
--
Cameron walked towards my bed and placed a hand on my cheek.
“Jesus. You look skinnier every time I see you.” She said examining my face. I frowned.
“Since when have you seen me get any skinnier?” I asked, thinking that I never got any skinnier of fatter like ever. She smiled softly.
“I’ve been here every few days to see you since… the accident. You’ve been loosing weight fast kid.” She said with a smile. I let my mouth hang open. She’d been visiting me…
“When they called and told me you were awake I brought someone to meet you. When he heard about the accident he wanted to come but there wasn’t much point while you were hooked up to machines and half dead.” She walked back over to the door and spoke to someone outside.
A very tall and broad man came in. He had white blonde hair and very blue eyes. I knew who he was instantly though to most people he was just a big good looking guy. To me he was so much more.
“Manny Redstone.” I breathed staring open mouthed at the record producer standing before me. He smiled and I could see a gold tooth flash at the back of his mouth.
“Well, well. So this is the girl I’ve been waiting to meet. Though I wish under better circumstances, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” He said holding out his hand for me to shake. I lifted my good arm and weakly shook his hand as well I could. He smiled again and withdrew.
Cameron sat by me and held onto my hand. It was a much softer gesture than any we had shared before. I saw Manny’s eyes drift to our entwined fingers but they snapped back to my face with another smile.
“After Cameron here sent me the rough recording of Pincushion hearts, I did some digging and found as much material of the band as I could. I even went to your school and got all of your recordings from… Mr Rayne.” He paced for a second then looked back to me.
“I’ll tell you the truth Rae. You are amazing. Your voice is like none I’ve heard and the musicians in your band are so phenomenal… it’s unreal you are so very young. I was going to make a trip down to your school to speak to you but then you had the accident so I have been waiting to tell you my decision about your band.”
He stopped talking and stared at me with a smile.
“What? What’s the decision?” I asked eagerly. He smiled once more.
“Hopefully, if you are well enough, I would like you and your band to come down to one of my studios near Camden and record a few songs professionally.” He said looking at me for my reaction. I stared at him open mouthed once more.
Recording with Manny Redstone… The Manny Redstone… It was such a huge opportunity.
“That’s so amazing… I’d say yes now but I need to speak to the rest of the band.” I said thinking about what Sam, John and James’ reactions would be when I told them. He nodded.
“I have to go now but I’ll leave you in Cameron’s capable hands.” He smiled a knowing smile and walked towards the door. He stopped at the last minute and turned back.
“By the way, what is your band called?” He asked. I smiled thinking of our bands name.
“Another London Disaster.” I said with a smile. He smiled.
“I like it.” He said before leaving. I turned to Cameron who was smiling at me.
“I can’t believe you know him! Fuck me… did that really just happen?” I said still in shock.
“I worked as his secretary for a few months and then he got a me a few jobs playing piano for some bands and we became friends. He’s cool and not it’s kinda my job to go out to schools, work for terms and see if there’s anyone worth signing.” I made a small O shape with my mouth.
She stood and leaned over me, her face inches from mine.
“And you are definitely worth signing.” She whispered her minty breath washing over my face. She then leaned in and pressed her lips to mine. I felt myself melt. How could a creature like Cameron like me?
I kissed back and we pulled apart a minute later after someone cleared their throat behind us. Cameron stood as she looked at the doctor and a stony faced James.
“I’ll see you later. Call me if you get out today.” I nodded and watched her go. Once she went the doctor closed the door behind her and walked to the end of my bed. James went and sat in the chair on my right side with a weary look on his face.
“We need to do some more tests to see how bad the nerve damage is but you should be able to go home by the end of today.” I smiled and nodded.
“The only thing I will say is don’t get your hopes too high. Best case scenario the damage is only temporary and you will get feeling back after a month or so of physiotherapy. Worst case scenario, the damage is permanent and you will never walk again.” I nodded slowly.
“What are the odds of that?” I asked in the most confident voice I could muster which wasn’t very.
“To be honest, it’s more likely to be the latter rather than the former but most likely it’s not permanent and will take a few years for you to be out of a wheel chair.” The doctor then left, leaving me and James alone. We sat in silence for a few minutes until I laughed painfully.
“That’s drumming out of the window. And bass and guitar with this arm. I’ll just be another singer with nothing else.” I finished the sentence bitterly staring ahead of me. I heard James sigh.
“Don’t worry Rae. It’ll be fine. You’re gonna walk again.” James said. I turned and looked at him. Finally there was some feeling on his face. He looked like he felt sorry for me. I snorted.
“I don’t need you to feel sorry for me. It’s my own fault for fucking with Jason in the first place.” I said bitterly.
“Jesus Rae it isn’t your fault. Jason was a cruel maniac and he deserves whatever he gets in prison.” I was startled by the ferocity in James’ statement. I stared at him and saw his face crumple slightly.
“He just didn’t deserve what I did to him.” He said in a small voice. I shook my head and reached out my good arm, placing my hand on his cheek and forcing him to look at me.
“James, he deserves everything. Please don’t let this get to you. Now please get some sleep. I’m going for tests soon so do it then just don’t let yourself fall apart over this.” He looked into my eyes and in that second it seemed all his tiredness came crashing down on him. His eyes instantly went droopy and he leant back in his chair and closed him eyes.
I think he fell asleep within seconds. A few minutes later a nurse came in to take me away to tests. I told her to speak quietly and gestured to James’ sleeping form. She smiled and spoke to me as she pushed my bed to its destination.
“He’s a sweet boy. Been sleeping here most nights since you came in told me all about you and your band. You’re a lucky girl.” I just nodded and ignored that she had assumed me and him were together.
I just laid back and thought about everything as we neared the tests.
--
It was a good three hours later when I got back from waiting about in corridors and random rooms for tests and things. When the nurse pushed me back into the room James was awake and John and Sam sat chatting animatedly to each other, obviously awaiting my return.
“Rae. You look better.” John said with a smile as the nurse pushed my bed back. I smiled back at him and waited until the nurse had gone to tell the three of them about meeting Manny Redstone.
Even James seemed interested as I spoke. By the end of the story the three of them were staring at me in shocked silence.
“Fuck me.” Sam breathed. The three of them looked at each other and none of them—even the most morbid of the three—could control themselves. They all started jumping up and down and whooping and shouting their joy.
“Omifuckingod! This is fucking amazing!” John squealed hugging me.
“I just can’t believe it!” Sam exclaimed.
“Fucking Cameron! I knew she had other motives at the school. What would someone like that come to our shite school?!” James half shouted a grin on his tired face. I smiled. I was so glad to see them happy.
There was a cough at the door. They went silent as the doctor glared at the tree of them. They then continued to sit down, John and Sam on the two chairs and James next to me on the bed. He grasped my hand with a smile. Finally, I could see hope in his eyes.
“Well, the results have come through and the good news is, I’m pleased to say, is that the damage to the nerves in your legs doesn’t look permanent.” I felt James squeeze my hand and I could see grins on the other boy’s faces.
“And the bad news?” I asked still not getting my hopes up too high.
“Well, the more severely damaged parts of your legs, your ankles mostly, are definitely never going to be the same and it is going to take a long time to get them back to even half their strength previous to the accident.” I bit my lip.
“This means that even after you have strength and feeling in the rest of your muscles, your ankles are still going to be very weak. Things like running are going to be difficult so any sports are off limits.” I breathed out air I hadn’t noticed I was holding. I didn’t do sports.
“Oh and something else that one of my patients with a similar condition complained of was that he couldn’t drum as he couldn’t work the pedals properly. I’m not sure if that was relevant to you but if it is I’m very sorry but it is strongly advised against even after the nerves are healed to the full extent they will ever be, as it may further damage the nerves with such strong physical exertion to them.” He smiled.
“Other than that, I am on my way to get your discharge forms and to find a wheelchair for you. You are free to go one you have filled out all the forms.” He smiled once more and then left.
I stared after him with a blank look. I felt Sam’s hand on my shoulder.
“Are you okay?” He asked softly. I bit my lip and then nodded before giving in to the tears that had welled up in my eyes. I pulled my hand from James’ and put my face in it as I couldn’t move my other arm enough to put it in both.
“I c-can never d-drum again.” I said my chest heaving with the effort of trying to stop the crying from turning into full blown sobbing. I felt people’s hands rubbing my back in a soothing manor and James’ arm went around my waist so that I could twist my body and bury my head into his chest.
I breathed in his scent and it calmed me somewhat. I soon stopped crying and composed myself as I saw the doctor coming down the corridor outside my room. He came in and handed me a clip board. Thank god it was my right arm that was damaged as I am left handed.
I filled in the form but James stopped me for a second when I got to birthday.
“Minus a year. We had to tell them they had the wrong date on your records and you were eighteen otherwise your mum would have to sign everything.” He whispered into my ear. I nodded and did as he said.
Once I was done I handed it back to the doctor and the nurse from earlier came into the room pushing a wheelchair. It was definitely new as it still had some plastic on it.
“You are free to go when you are ready.” The doctor said before leaving. The nurse smiled and pushed the wheelchair next to the bed. She quickly pulled of the last of the plastic and brushed off the seat.
“I got you one of the new ones cause you’re a special one.” She beamed at me. I smiled and bit my lip. How was I going to get into the wheelchair when I still wasn’t used to having no feeling in my legs.
I looked at James and he jumped up as if realising. He then slipped his arms underneath me and picked me up as if I was a baby. He was sure that my bad arm was laid on my stomach so it wouldn’t hang and cause me discomfort and then gently put me down in the chair.
For now I wasn’t going to be able to push it myself so James stepped behind me and pushed the chair. I quickly made sure I was totally covered in the skimpy hospital gown then stared ahead as James pushed me towards the exit, John and Sam flanking me on either side.
“Onwards to home!” I yelled as we got out the front doors, startling an old lady going into the hospital. I grinned at her trying to keep positive and pointed out infront of me. The others laughed and I laughed along with them hoping that I still had some pills left at home…
