Shades of Gray

My best friend is unique

Different

Unlike any other

Her hair is black as night

And her skin had a transparent look

She follows me everywhere I go

That is how we met

When I was younger, she was frightening

But as we grew

I saw her differently

She became a paradox

A curiosity

And eventually, she became an acquaintance

An ally

A friend

She's the only one whom I trust completely

I tell her all my secrets

And I know she'll never tell

She is silent

Never speaking a word

But I don't mind

It just means she's a good listener

She has stood by me through thick and thin

Never wavering in her allegiance

When I see her in the morning light

I always admire her humble nature

Her muted clothing

With it's many shades of gray

When night comes

And she fades into the darkness

I can still feel her presence

Comforting

Soothing

Easing away my pains

And I know

When I turn on the light

She will be right beside me

For she is my confidant

We are bound to each other

Symbiont creatures

Thriving on each others existence

Always together

Never apart

I can never hate her

For that would mean I hate myself

She is my constant companion

My partner in crime

And her name

is Shadow
