I don't know what people think of this story so far, but here's chapter one.

Chapter One: Hopeless

Ever since five years ago, Makoto and Kaiyo have been dating, but recently things had started to get rough for them. They aren’t in the same school; they can’t meet up after school because both of them are busy. The only way they can communicate with each other is by calling each other and by instant messaging. Makoto has been too busy with tennis and swimming to even bother to go online and talk to Kaiyo or to even pick up the phone to call her.

After two months, Kaiyo had started to get worried; she didn’t know whether or not that it was because he wanted to break up with her, or if it was because he was actually too busy. Kaiyo knows that she should have faith in her boyfriend, but it seems impossible at that time.

“Emiko, I think that Makoto finds me a bother now.” Kaiyo sounded worried.

“Kaiyo, listen. It’s his loss if he breaks up with you – not that I’m saying he would. I think that you should break up with him though. He hasn’t done anything that a boyfriend should do.”

“I guess, but I really like him.”

“Then don’t. Just remember, do whatever makes you happy.” And with Emiko saying that, she didn’t break up with Makoto – but also didn’t talk to him for half a year.

Half a year later, Kaiyo was almost able to let go of Makoto, but one day, when she was on the computer instant messaging her friends, then suddenly, a window pops up.

Makoto: Hey

Kaiyo: Hi? Why haven’t you been online lately?

Makoto: Sorry, I’ve been a bit busy.

Kaiyo: So… what would we be considered now?

Makoto: I don’t know. Let me ask you a question...

Kaiyo: ... yes?

Makoto: Do you still like me?

Kaiyo: ... I don’t know... I think I still like you... What about you?

Makoto: I can tell you that I still like you. I’m sure of that.

Kaiyo: Then why’d you do that for? Why?

Makoto: Sorry, I had thought I liked somebody else, but in the end, the one I love is you.

Kaiyo types with the sweetest smile on her face, I love you too. And with that conversation, they had officially started dating again.

Everyday, she would be eager to get home, and wait on the computer for him to come online, and talk for hours. Once in a while, during his soccer matches, she would visit him. No matter how you look at it, it would seem that their love was so genuine, like it was going to last forever.

Kaiyo had got to know Yukio, Makoto’s friend very well. He was a nice and sweet guy, always so polite to her. She could rely on Yukio to look out for Makoto. Never did she ever expect Yukio to tell her that Makoto had done something that betrayed her.

Yukio: Kaiyo, Makoto asked Aoi to the dance today.

Kaiyo: ... what?

Yukio: I’m serious... but Aoi said no since she knows that you and Makoto are dating.

Kaiyo: Sorry, but... I think I got to go now. Thanks for telling me.

Yukio: Bye. Sorry for telling you though, I just thought you’d want to know.

Immediately, she emails Makoto, telling him to call her since she needs to talk to him. Within a few hours, he replies her, telling her not to believe Yukio.

Kaiyo, I know that Yukio was talking to you and...

I love you forever until the day I die

Trust me, I don’t lie about these things

You are the one

Haven’t you ever heard of love at first sight?

I don’t like anybody, but You.

-Makoto

Kaiyo thought that no matter what, she should trust Makoto. Their relationship had lasted for another few months, but when a girl from his school had told her than he asked her out again, she had started to doubt him. No matter how much she wanted to believe him, when not only one person, but a few people told her that Makoto is cheating on her, she couldn’t help worrying.

At that time, she was enrolled in an extra curricular class and got to meet Suoh, a high school junior. The class was sorted by levels; therefore Kaiyo and Suoh were in the same class. She had gone to him for advice, since all of her other friends wanted her to break up with Makoto. Suoh had supported her, telling her to believe in Makoto.

At school, Kaiyo had to prepare for the entrance exam to her junior high, since she wanted to go to go to the local advanced school. She had been busy keeping up her grades and managing what her parents want her to do. Apart from school, her parents want her to take swimming, art, piano and two other language lessons. Thankfully, Makoto understands and doesn’t blame Kaiyo for being able to spend much time with him.

Soon, the entrance exam was over, her piano exam was over and her swimming lessons had ended. To Kaiyo, it meant she would be able to spend more time with her boyfriend. They had spent the majority of their time with each other; eventually, Kaiyo’s friends got annoyed.

“Kaiyo, what happened?” her friend Aiko, asked.

“I don’t understand.” She replied with a confused expression.

“You only spend time with your boyfriend now, and even when you are with us, you talk about him!”

“I’m sorry; it’s just that I don’t want to risk our relationship. I don’t know what to do without him.”

“You have to learn to let go of things. You can’t make him your life. I thought you had said that he had cheated on you before.”

Thinking about what her friend had said, she decided to limit her time with him. With a heavy heart and heavy hands, Kaiyo picked up the phone and called.

“Hello? Makoto?”

“Kaiyo? Is something wrong?”

Taking a deep breath, “I just wanted to tell you I think we both need some space.”

There was an awkward silence until Makoto spoke up, “What do you mean by that?”

“I’m not saying we should break up, I just mean we need to spend more time with our friends. Like, we can still be together and spend time with each other as well as our friends.”

“Oh, of course. I just hope nothing’s wrong.”

“Nothing’s wrong, believe me. I love you.”

“Love you too sweetie.” She hung up the phone, hoping Makoto didn’t get the wrong idea. Kaiyo hoped that this way, Makoto would have more freedom, and both their friends would no think that they can only see each other.

Within a month, she realized things have changed. Makoto seemed distant, not knowing whether or not it was because of her phone call, she was worried. Soon, Kaiyo had received another instant message from Yukio.

Yukio: Kaiyo, Makoto did that again

Kaiyo: Did what?

Yukio: He asked out another girl

Kaiyo: What?

Yukio: I told him not to. Thank goodness the majority of our school knows you two are going out with each other, so she rejected him

Kaiyo: Yukio, what should I do? I don’t want to loose Makoto

Yukio: I don’t know, I’m not one to say. You’ll have to decide.

Kaiyo: Thanks for telling me though.

Kaiyo, lost and confused, decided to confront Makoto. She asked Makoto if he had done that. He only replied her with a sorry. Not wanted to say things that she will regret, she immediately left. A day later, she saw Suoh at the lessons. Kaiyo told Suoh about what happened, asking for advice.

“Break up with him,” Suoh had said, “If he had cheated on you, which means he doesn’t know how much you are worth. As a guy, I can tell you if he can do that more than once, he can do that again. I don’t want to see you get hurt.” He looked at her, as if she was his younger sister.

Kaiyo believed Suoh and decided to end the relationship. Hoping not to ruin things anymore than they are already ruined, she had only said to him, Sorry, but I think it would be better if we were just friends. As expected, Makoto replied her with an okay.

Kaiyo, not being able to bare the pain, for the first time, she took the blade in her hands and dug deep into her skin. One after the other, she had made three permanent scars on her left arm.

Kaiyo, realizing what she has done to herself and does not wish for her friends to worry about her, does not tell her friends. Everyday, she goes to school, pretending to be happy, pretending nothing happened. None of her friends found out about Makoto until they had asked her.

“Hey Kaiyo. What happened between you and Makoto these days? I haven’t heard about him in a while.” Hitomi, one of Kaiyo’s best friends at her school, asked.

“We broke up.” Kaiyo answered simply.

“Oh okay. Wait, WHAT?” Her friends yell at her.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”
“Oh my gosh! Why?”

“He cheated on me. He asked out another girl.”

“Are you serious?” Her friend asked.

“Idiot! Why would she joke around with these stuff?”

“But listen Kaiyo, no matter what, no matter when, no matter where, we will always be here for you.” Hitomi assures her.

Kaiyo nods, grateful she has such wonderful friends. Not long after, she receives her acceptance letter into the school she had applied for. Hoping that it would be a new start for her, she decided to go there. A week later, she breaks the news to her friends.

“Go for it Kaiyo!” Hitomi encourages.

“Aw, Kaiyo. I support you, BUT if you don’t like it there, you must come back!”
“Yes Aiko, I promise you that. And thanks, all of you, for supporting me.”
