Make Believe
--
I thought I had grown older, wiser
That I had experienced the wide spectrum
Of life’s colors in completion.
That is a perpetual lie.
We are, and always will be
Children, at heart.
Just when one thinks they know
The game, and holds all the cards,
Someone always has a fifth ace up their sleeves.
That’s what you never see
Coming.
Ever.
You’re so young, so naïve
And yet I feel witless when in your presence
I feel scared, overwhelmed
Out of all the women I have been drawn to,
Only you do this to me,
Strip away my colors,
My experiences,
Leaving a base human,
You’ve robbed me of my confidence,
Of certainty
Of choice
Of common sense.
It’s hard to act in a play you’ve never seen the script to.
But the director has insisted that I try this particular performance
Blindfolded
Deaf.
“It’s an experiment”
What an ugly phrase
I dread the day it passes your lips.
Tell me it will never come
Lie to me.
Make me believe
In fantasy
