Well, this is it. It’s time to stop staring at the huge hotel and just get out of the car. I still can’t believe this has even happened. Everything just happened way too fast.
I curled my fingers around the door handle, yanked it, and then pushed the door open. My legs are shaking; getting used to standing after a two day drive.
“Isn’t it beautiful Dezi?” My mom asks me. She is way too excited about this. Why the hell did she go along with my dad’s idea? She is a smart woman and usually thinks things through before going through with anything. She said this would be a new adventure, that it would be a life changing experience for us kids. Oh, yes it will be.
I grunted and followed my parents into the front door. Walking into the hotel was like walking into the past. Everything seemed so ancient, from the interior design to the furniture and even to the receptionist at the front desk. Like reading my thoughts, she looked up from what she was doing. She got up faster than what I thought she could move and walked towards us. “Why hello! You must be the Harpers!”
Instead of just shaking our hands like normal people do, this old biddy hugged us. “The name’s Elsie Marden. I’m so sorry for your loss.” She locked at my father. “Your uncle was a good man. He loved this hotel so much. Just like he loved you Adam.
“Why thank you Elsie.” I think my dad actually blushed. “How about you kids go along and get your bags from the car and start unpacking while we discuss some business?”
Without hesitation, I walked out of the massive building. Not even three feet behind me were my brothers, Chaz, Jared, and Darren. Chaz was my very annoying seventeen year old twin brother. I guess you could say that he’s the jock type. He loves sports while I could give a shit about them. I’m more of the down to earth people. Friends with everyone. Not competitive in everything. Yet basically good at anything. But I don’t like to brag.
Anyway Jared is fourteen. He’s the kid who is crazy about cars. Knows about everything there is to know about them. Then there’s the sixteen year old Darren. He’s a creepy little bugger. Reads those murder mystery books and is obsessed with horror films.
“Yo Dezi! Wait up!” Chaz yelled behind me. “So what do you think of the place? I think it’s pretty cool. I bet girls love this type of shit!”
“My God! Is that all you think about! Do you not care that we left all our friends back home? We’ll never see them again!” I shouted at Chaz while grabbing my suitcase from the trunk.
“Of course I care, but we’ll make new friends here too. Just give it a shot.”
While the rest of grabbed our belongings, Darren just stood on the cracked sidewalk staring at the towering hotel in front of us. “I don’t think we should really live here. This place gives me the creeps.”
Jared laughed,” Wow, this is coming from the guy who loved the movie 1408! And no one cares what you think Darren; dad inherited it after his Uncle Jimmy died. By the way, does anyone know how he died?”
“I don’t freaking care! I have other things to worry about.” I stated.
After unpacking my things in the room that I was told was mine, I walked around the hotel. I realized it wasn’t such a bad place. I peered out a window which obviously looked over the backyard of the hotel. It was enormous! There was an Olympic sized looking pool. On the left side of the pool stood a big white gazebo with roses planted around it. To the right of the pool was a sixteen stall horse stable. I think I might actually like living here.
While I was still observing outside, I felt a cool rush of air blow past behind me. Without knowing right away, the hair on the back of my neck rose, as if someone was behind me and was going to scare me. So of course I thought it was one of my brothers trying to freak me out.
I whirled around and yelled out, “Knock it off!” There was no one there. The only thing out of the ordinary was the lights on the ceiling were flickering. More than likely works of my brothers. What pricks.
I went and finished checking out the hotel. I even saw a few guests also wandering down the long corridors. Some looked so happy together while some had wide eyed looks on their faces and were walking quite fiercely. Wonder what their problems were?
Making my way downstairs, I found everyone in what looked like a huge library. In the middle of the furthest wall was a massive stone fireplace with overstuffed reading chars in front of it. There must have been thousands of ooks in here. It’s like a dream come true!
My brothers were also in the library. Walking towards them, I gave them the evil eye. All three of them just looked at me like they were innocent.
Elsie was telling my parents about how the hotel was ran. The weird part was that my parents looked interested in what she was saying. Why did my dad even inherit the hotel? Didn’t his uncle Jimmy have a family of his own? I’ll have to ask my dad about that later.
After they were done talking, Elsie looked at us kids, “I know it must be hard for you. The move and all. Well my grandkids help out around the hotel here. They’ll be here tomorrow and I thought you’d like to meet them. They are just your age too; so when you start school in the fall you will know someone. How does that sound?”
I thought it over. That wasn’t such a bad idea. It would be great to have friends here. So I was the one who spoke first, “That sound wonderful Elsie.”
Chaz stared at me, stunned that I sounded so happy. I guess I was a little surprised myself.
It’s been nine long months since she has last seen him. She can still remember how he looked when she left. His coal black hair just brushed the tip of his shirt. The piercing blue eyes that could just melt your insides were right above his high cheek bones. Between those cheeks was the most glorious mouth she’d ever seen. But that didn’t take away from his chiseled jaw with a cleft in his chin.
It’s no wonder she fell in love with him when she fist met him at the hotel. She was just checking in with her parents for the night. He was the handsome bell boy who carried her things up to their room.
On that walk up to the room, they connected. She barely knew him, but dubbed him to be the perfect man. Over a five day span, they were inseparable. She would sneak out of her hotel room at night to be with him. And they did more than just talking.
But then the day came when she and her family had to go back home. She begged and pleaded with her parents to let her stay. They told her no. that she could come back after she was done with school.
He looked so sad the day she left. She hoped that he had missed her as much as she had him. Now they could be together forever.
Climbing up the steps to the hotel was a real challenge for her. She was experiencing some sharp pains in her abdominal region.
She had just entered the lobby of the familiar hotel when she felt some sort of liquid running down her legs. The time has come and what a coincidental time it was.
Looking down, she saw a puddle of water surrounding her feet. When she looked back up her eyes locked with those dreamy blue eyes she felt in love with. The expression on his face was priceless. Shock mixed with anger as he saw who it was. She didn’t seem to notice. She spoke in a strained voice, “Hello. I think now’s the perfect time to tell you, that you’re going to be a father Jimmy.”
