I waited by the door

The day your letter came.

I waited by the door

And there I still remain.

You ancient letter still

In my hand is grasped.

I have your letter still

Though my heart’s collapsed.

I thought one day you’d come

And I’d be allowed to stand,

But you still haven’t come

Though your damn letter’s in my hand.

My heart is always waiting

Though I’m dead and gone.

My heart is always waiting

Though my soul’s moved on.

I still watch for you

Forgetting you were cruel.

I still watch for you

Making myself a fool.

The day you come, I’ll greet your ghost

Looking very prim.

The day you come, I’ll greet your ghost

Looking very grim.

We’ll be together and happy

Though there’s one thing I hate;

And that is when you made me

Sit for so long and wait.
