Autumn Cannibalism

Sometimes I think

I would like to nibble on

Your ear

To see how you taste.

I would be satisfied

For a while.

But one morning I know

I’d awaken and be overcome

And taste you again.

Perhaps that would be

Enough.

Just a bite or two

Of your ear or your nose

Or your lips

Or a finger or two.

I worry that I would become

An addict.

I’d bum licks and bites

Promise I’d pay you back someday

Knowing perfectly well I never will.

What would people say?

As you slowly disappeared?

First your left and then your right,

The index and the ring?

I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt.

You’d barely even notice

The missing inch of flesh,

A new bone exposed,

A part of you I used

To sustain myself.

But I mean it, people would worry.

Because they’d all want to know who

Ate your face.
