the train howls in the night-
a lonely nomadic sound,
as its whirring pulses along
like a small furry thing.
it is strong though, each short throb
punctuated with metal
and the tracks that ground it.
i wonder,
how can something be both wolf
and mouse at once?

black plastic at my mouth,
i am inhaling more quickly
and each drag
of cloud across my lips seems
pulled from from that predatory
creature fleeing from some
other doll with murder or
hedonism on the brain.
i feel so
lost in these beads
and man dreams.

you laugh at my sequined frown,
automatically checking your hat brim as you slide a hand
across the V of skin left bare by my dress.
so i say "haven't you got to see a man about a dog?"
and we are even again.
your eyes, those beads,
(how could i not have noticed they were the same?)
crinkle distractedly, because
you know these vamps are all the same.

"c'mon, baby" and i know
that we are off to another dingy room
where all the girls giggle and we are
going too fast.
