there were footsteps coming up the steps, and she was quick to call out "mom?"
but then no, it was her brother, and his girlfriend was coming up awkwardly behind him.
she walked out of her door, glancing into his room as he pulled up the mattress she had so carefully put money in, 160 or so, wrapped up with a little note. the note was pointless now.
"adam?"
he was looking for his jeans. he would need them, afterall, he was going to California while she was stuck going to Florida with her mom's boyfriend's family. he was sposed to be at daddy's house, but daddy had bought him tickets to come home, and unbeknownst to any blood relatives except herself, adam was going to Cali to visit their stepsister, but since daddy didn't like her, adam just pretended he would stay in town with his girlfriend while mom thought he was still at his boarding school.
it was quite a web of lies to weave.
"is that enough money, you think?"
"yeh, it is."
his girlfriend was still just standing there. she almost felt sorry for her.
she went to get more money, because honestly, she really loved her brother, and she wanted him to have fun, even if she wouldn't have fun.
"here," she handed him another wad, and he hugged her, and they were clomping downstairs.
she thought they were gone, but then he yelled her name, and she came running downstairs, but it was only to close and lock the door after them.
and then she was back upstairs, and she hated packing, and now she was too excited to go to sleep.
