If they are not waiting for you now

If they are not waiting for you now

We’ll have to fake our smiles once we get past the first three steps

And you were tying dandelions into knots

Leaving trails of yellow stain everywhere we went

I forgot what the lights looked like in that place you told me about

And I was already shutting the curtains to tomorrow

I asked you about strangers

And you named off everyone we ever knew

I asked you about friends

You named strangers

If we last like this

You told me you’d take me to that house on the ocean

The dying place with the pretty flowers

And you promised the waves wouldn’t touch us

But I could only picture my body being washed ashore

Make me a burial bed

And send me off into all that I have never known.
