Prologue

He stared at her, his brown eyes hard and cold He stared at her, his brown eyes hard and cold. He looked into her face, saw her befuddled expression and sighed. “Holly, what don’t you understand?” His tone was marred with anger. “I’m leaving town and I am leaving you.”

She glanced back at him and swore she saw his face wince at his words. Then, his jaw went tight again.

“I’m sorry you wasted your time with me then.” Holly returned with as much menace as she could muster. She felt dizzy and her legs sagged as she hit the bed.

“Yes, I’m sorry too.” He swept past her and walked over to the door. “And Holly?” She turned around and saw Thomas looking at her. “We probably shouldn’t be friends anymore either.” He spun on his heel and walked from the room, leaving Holly gasping for air.

Then, her heart tore in two.
