“It happened again,” I sobbed into the phone. I was too breathless to talk anymore.

“Do you want to come over?” his voice so soothing.

“Yes…but he might wake up again,” I spoke so softly; I’m surprised he heard me.

“He won’t,” he reassured me; Mark always knew what to say. “Please come over.”

“Okay,” I cried quietly.

I walked out of the back door so my dad wouldn’t wake up. The rain fell steadily. For the past four years, about three times a week, my stepfather had come home at midnight drunk. He would take out his frustrations on me, various ways-- first beatings, but then for the last couple months the beatings became rapes--like this time.

My best friend, who had these intense stormy blue eyes and raven black hair, would take me from the dark clouds that shadowed my world.

I am outside
And I've been waiting for the sun
With my wide eyes
I've seen worlds that don't belong
My mouth is dry with words I cannot verbalize
Tell me why we live like this

I knocked on his window and he opened it, letting me in.

Once he did, he held me close to him as I cried into his wife-beater shirt. We stayed like that until he let go; that left me cold and feeling alone. He eyes pierced my soul. I can never lie or keep anything from him; he would know.

Keep me safe inside
Your arms like towers
Tower over me

“Rape?” he coldly said. I just nodded falling back into his arms.

“Shush, I’m here and no one will take me from you.”

“Mark, I’m scared to go home and I really don’t want to do this anymore.”

“I know.” He kissed the top of my head reassuringly. But it just made me shiver that much more. He led me to sit on his bed and held me safely in his arms. My hand was glued to his chest; his heartbeat lulled me to a dreamless sleep.

Yeah
Cause we are broken
What must we do to restore
Our innocence
And all the promise we adored
Give us life again cause we just wanna be whole

I woke up the next morning with a strange but familiar scent hitting my nose. I breathed in more and more, getting a high unlike any other. That smell was like sweet apples and sweat; I tried to lift my head but when I did this smelling thing groaned.

The door swung open. “What the fucking hell is going on here!?” Mark’s mom stood at the doorway sternly looking from Mark to me.

“Stay here,” Mark whispered in my ear breathily and got up from our current position. I didn’t blame his mom for thinking something went on a little bit more then should have.

“Mom, I love you but right now is not a good time; it’s a matter of Leslie’s fate,” he said calmly as his mother bore her eyes into his face. Then he shut the door and locked it.

Lock the doors
Cause I'd like to capture this voice
That came to me tonight
So everyone will have a choice
And under red lights
I'll show myself it wasn't forged
We're at war
We live like this

“I’m sorry my mom woke you up,” he apologized laying down back to the position we were in before.

“It’s quite alright.” My voice was hoarse from what had happened last night.

“Let’s go to the park.”

“Random, but okay.” I smiled as he took my hand. We ran all the way there--we went out his window not wanting to run into his mom.

When we got there he took me first to the swings and he sat me down pushing me as I came back to him, lifting my legs back and forth so I could get higher.

“Higher; I want to touch the clouds.” I tried to reach out but then I was jerked back quickly as he held the swing back. A held me against his chest and I leaned into it.

“Aww…isn’t that sweet,” said a married couple as they pushed the baby stroller forward.

My eyes widened as I realized I was going to be in that predicament in seven months. I was planning on telling Mark last night, but his heartbeat and other comforting gestures were too much.

I guess he noticed my stilled heart for a second.

He came around and kneeled on the ground. “What’s wrong?”

“I…I don’t know how to tell you,” I cried.

“Just tell me! Please!”

“I…I…am,” I stammered. “Pregnant.” I whispered the last part. He face fell. I closed my eyes to help stop the tears from falling…it didn’t help.

“That bastard,” he said into my hair as he held me closer. I sobbed harder.

Keep me safe inside
Your arms like towers
Tower over me

“Where have you been bitch?” my father said. I wasn’t expecting him to be home.

“Out…” I coldly replied. I wanted to use as little words as possible.

“Whore…” he said. “I wasn’t down with you last night.” He was obviously drunk. He was sitting on the other side of the room and I could smell the Vodka on his breath.

“I think you were,” I said and exited the room but he reached out grabbed me sharply, forcing me against the wall as he began grabbing and groping my breast.

His lips captured mine in a disgustingly hasty kiss and he pulled my shirt and pants off. I tried to resist, but he punched me down to the ground.

He took of his belt and lifted it far above his head, whipping me slowly, then faster, leaving welts on my body.

Then he pulled off his pants and garments and held me down, smacking me around more.

Just when he was about to go inside of me, I felt cold and heard men yelling and a fight ensuing. I felt a blanket lay on top of me and my lips were captured in the softest, sweetest and most passionate kiss in my life.

Cause we are broken
What must we do to restore
Our innocence
And all the promise we adored
Give us life again cause we just wanna be whole

Tower over me
Tower over me

And I'll take the truth at any cost

I opened my eyes to see I was in the room I feel asleep in last night; Mark’s room.

I was dressed with an arm vicariously wrapped around me. I looked up to see the angelic face of Mark.

“Good morning,” he said his eyes were open watching me.

“Hello.” My hoarse voice found that simple word.

He held me closer and I knew it was his kiss that saved me last night.

“Your stepfather is in jail,” he told me, reading my mind.

“I love you,” I said in return.

His face lit up and he caught my lips in one of those amazing kisses that I had only dreamed of.

“I love you too,” he said and kissed the top of my head. “My mom is going to help with the baby.”

Cause we are broken
What must we do to restore
Our innocence
And all the promise we adored
Give us life again cause we just wanna be whole

I cried into his chest. “We are whole.”
