Story Of My Life
Amori Takahashi
A Million and One Surprises
“How I missed this sight.” Dannon said, appearing in the distance with Ezra tagging along. Amori looked up from Zeke, who refused to let her out of his arms. Ezra looked thrilled, like a child at Christmastime.
“So Mom, you and Dad are happy again?” He asked, a smile spreading across his face. Zeke mumbled something about still being unaccustomed to being called ‘Dad’ and Amori smiled and nodded to Ezra, hitting Zeke on the head sharply, causing him to let go and clutch his own head. As she stood up he glared at her. “What was that for?”
“My legs were cramping and you wouldn’t let go.” She shrugged. Ezra blinked and looked to Dannon, who was smiling happily. “Did they used to be like this?”
Dannon gave a hearty laugh. “Oh you don’t even know the half of it.” He smiled before stepping forward. “Now that you two are reunited, let’s get down to business.”
Amori nodded and turned to Zeke. “They say the reason they brought us here is that something terrible is happening.” The blue haired dragon blinked but nodded and Dannon sat down in front of the two, Ezra taking a seat next to Amori.
Dannon nodded and looked at them all with a remorseful face. “We call it “The Darkness”. No one really knows what it is, or who controls it, but it’s a black cloud that can destroy an entire city and cause it to look like ruins that are 100 years old. It’s destroyed 5 cities in 2 years and killed countless. That’s why we need you three.”
Amori looked down. “You want us to find out what it is and who’s controlling it and stop it?” Zeke asked, sensing Amori’s hesitation. Dannon nodded solemnly and Amori looked up. “What are you not telling us?”
Ezra sighed heavily and ran a hand through his shaggy blue hair. “One of the five cities attacked…was Leore.” He didn’t look her in the eyes, but instead looked at his father, who sat with a slightly confused look on his face.
“Leore?” Zeke looked over at Amori as she stood up and walked over to the lake. Staring into the crystal clear water, she sighed. “Since you don’t remember your life as Zeke, I wouldn’t expect you to know of Leore.
“Before I had met you, before I had even known Dannon, Leore was my home. A small, peaceful city where my mother and father resided. Small though it was, it was the capital of the country. My father ruled it with kindness and justice. After my uncle came and killed my mother and father, he used Leore and the other towns to take over nearby countries. You don’t recall that, but it was my mission to kill my uncle and take my spot as Queen of my country.” She said quietly, not looking at Zeke.
“After I succeeded in killing him, this was many years after you died,” Amori added off-handedly, “I managed to turn Leore and the rest of the country back into a peaceful society, like how my father had it.” Ezra stood up and placed a gentle hand on his mother’s shoulder.
“And then you got sick, right? You hid it for years, but after I married Kailynn you…” He paused, unsure if Amori wanted Zeke to know of how she died. Luckily for him, Amori nodded and placed her hand on Ezra’s.
“I killed myself and made you the king.” Zeke stared hard at Amori, a look of disbelief crossed his face. “Don’t look at me like that Zeke! I was dying as it was. Slowly and painfully. The pain was too much and so I ended it.”
Dannon, who had listened quietly the last few minutes, finally spoke up. “No one blames you, Amori. Now I think we should all rest and eat dinner. I’m sure that being reunited so suddenly, you all want a chance to catch up before we move back on to talk about the other problem.”
As Dannon cooked dinner, Amori, Zeke, and Ezra took the opportunity to get to know eachother. Zeke, still unaccustomed to being a father, looked slightly unnerved by the whole thing. “You know,” Ezra said, looking the shorter man up and down, “I always pictured you to be…a little more different.” He mumbled. Amori chuckled and smiled.
“My fault…I told you many stories but my drawing was never good enough to show you what he looked like.” Zeke looked between the two. “Kat-er, I mean Amori, this is so insane.” He said, shaking his head. “I mean, one day I’m a 17 year old boy and then suddenly I’m a 1,000 year old dragon with a son in another world.”
The black-haired woman smiled, tail twitching. “I know it’s strange, but doesn’t it feel almost like this is how it’s supposed to be? I feel…for once in my entire life I feel like I’m where I belong.” The blue haired dragon nodded, knowing how she felt. “Still it’s weird.”
“So Ezra, where’s Kailynn? How many years have passed, exactly?” Ezra looked down, remorsefully before taking a breath and looking at her.
“Kailynn died fourteen years ago. She got a disease…um….leukemia I think you call it on Earth?” Amori gave him a sorrowful look and opened her mouth to apologize but was cut off. “Yeah, so it’s been about 87 years since you passed on, Mom. Oh, and Dad? You should try and get used to the idea of being a father quick, because my daughter should be here by morning.”
It was when Ezra said that, that Amori and Zeke both dropped their jaws and looked at him in shock. “DAUGHTER?!” They cried out in unison, although Amori’s was happier than Zeke’s, who sounded like he was about to faint. Ezra rubbed the back of his head. “Yeah, her name is Sora. She’s fourteen and as beautiful as her mother was.” He said with a pride in his voice.
Amori squeeled in joy. “I’m a grandma! And I get to see her!” She grinned and looked over to Zeke when she heard a ‘thud’. The poor man fainted and now laid beside Amori.
“Huh, guess the joy was overwhelming.” She mumbled, still smiling.
