Prologue
A feeling of déjà vu always comes upon me as I step out into the rain. I’ve been here before, never this thirsty, but always this alone. The reflection I see in the puddle at my feet is one I’ve had to confront for centuries. My alabaster skin and violet eyes shine in the glow of the moonlight, the face of a monster glowers back at me. Why did it happen? It has been half of a century since I’ve had the desire for human flesh, so why does this change anything. I am the fearless leader who doesn’t falter at the scent of a mortal. It’s just, he smells so good. Why does he have to smell so good?
Chapter One: The Counterparts
“Loosen up a little!”
“Fifty years is way to long without a taste.”
“Come on, Violet, it’ll be fun.”
This wasn’t the first night they had tried to convince me to hunt with them. It happens every Friday. Jade, Carmine, and Saffron spend their night at Neon, the hottest spot for mortals to quench their thirst for alcohol, excitement, and lust; thus their ideal hunting ground. I’d like to think they get tired of having to lie and seduce for their meals, but I know that’s not the case. I’ve been there and I know it’s a thrill. One I can’t say I miss too much. Street mice and pigeons work fine for me.
“You deserve some fun, Vi. Our ‘fearless leader’ needs to find herself a meat boy” an excited Jade suggested while adding the finishing touches to her beautiful short, auburn curls.
“Oh my god! That is an amazing idea,” squealed Saffron as she ran from the bathroom, long dirty blonde strands bouncing with each step. “Come on, Vi! It’s been so long since you’ve had a human, much less a man! Stop with the rats for one night. Please.”
“You guys are ridiculous; you know she will never come with us. I don’t think she knows how to have fun” Carmine snorted, trying to straighten out her sleek, too short chocolate brown locks.
“Very true,” Saffron and Jade chimed in unison.
“Oh, give me a break! I know how to have fun.” I screamed feeling the eyes around the room rolling back. “Fine, if I go out with you guys tonight, will you leave me alone for the next…oh, lets say…. fifty years?” I said with minimal excitement and maximum sarcasm.
“Yes! I promise. No bothering for the next fifty years, scout’s honor,” said Jade holding up her three middle fingers as if she knew what a boy scout was. I’ve never seen her green eyes glow with such intensity.
“Could you at least fix your hair first? For god sakes, you look like you got attacked by whatever pigeons you were feeding on.”
I expected a comment like that from Carmine, yet I still turned to the closest mirror and noticed that my thin, jet black hair was sticking up in all different directions, my pale skin was pastier that normal, and my usual pale purple eyes took on a much darker tone. There was much worked to be done if I expected to attract any attention away from the three unnaturally gorgeous counterparts by my side.
“Thanks for the encouragement, Carm. Give me five minutes and I’ll be ready for anything…I hope.”
