Chapter Three: The Fight

Chapter Three: The Meeting

The night continued on without any more confrontations. Carm stayed her distance and I stayed mine, but as vibrant as Jade is, I couldn’t not stay idle as I would have liked. She worked the room, dancing with anyone who asked, introducing me to the regulars. It was all too overwhelming for me, so I slithered off to the bar to prep myself for the rest of the night. As I sat there, downing shots of vodka, I felt a pair of eyes on me. This usually wouldn’t bother me, since I’m use to the attention, but a strange aroma engulfed my nose as the owner of the stare came closer. It was a scent I had never smelt before. It was sweet, like honey, but more intoxicating then the shots I had consumed only moments before. Dizziness hit me like a ton of bricks, but it was nothing compared to what I felt when I saw him.

He was tall. Taller than me that is, but not as tall as Marcos. His skin was creamy white, much like my own, but with a flash of pink. The eyes that had been burrowing into my skull were a radiant copper with swirls of green. Nothing you would ever see in my kind. They fit well with his dark brown hair, cut short as if to try and hide the soft baby curls I could see peeking out at the base of his neck. More amazing was his smile. His pearly white smile seemed all to perfect to belong to a human, and indeed he was a human. The most beautiful one I had ever seen.

When he reached my side, I flashed him my most brilliant smile, which, inevitably caused a rush of blood to his cheeks. I could smell it; feel it. I could almost taste it. What was happening to me?

“Hi…uh… I noticed your glass was kind of empty. Could I maybe buy you another one?” he said, his deep voice rubbing me in all right places. I had to hold myself back from leaping at him. I bit my lip realizing it was my turn to respond.

“No, thanks. I think I’ve had one too many already.” I uttered, noticing the confidence draining from him face. “ But I could use someone to talk to.” I continued, patting the seat beside me. He smiled, sliding onto the stool next to me. I could feel his body tense as I shift my weight in his direction, giving him a full view of my violet eyes. I heard him whisper a “wow” under his breath. That’s all I needed to hear. I had him.

“My name is Lowden,” he said sticking his hand in my direction.

“Violet” I offered. I placed my hand in his, feeling the warmth for just a second before he winced and ripped his hand from my grip.

“Jesus, your hand is cold.” He shrieked, shaking the feeling back into his hand.

“Sorry, it is a bit chilly in here.” I apologized knowing the reason for my icy hands.

“Nah, its alright.” He smiled, his teeth glowing in the black light. “ So Violet. That’s a pretty name. It definitely explains the purple contacts.”

“Um…sure,” is the only thing I could muster. I thought to myself, while suppressing a giggle,

“If he only knew.”

Confusion flooded Lowden’s face. He opened his mouth to rebuttal, but was abruptly silenced by an ominous on looker. I didn’t have to turn around to know who it was, though I did. The three familiar faces stared at me with a mixture of pride and disgust. Judgment burned from the bright blue, smoldering black, and radiant orange eyes standing before me. I slid off my stool to stand directly in front of the boys, but was guarded by a slender arm pulling me back. What did he think he was doing?

“ Hey babe, looking good tonight” the boy with the blue eyes taunted, winking at me suggestively.

“Do you know these guys?” Lowden muttered; the hint of defense in his voice surprised me.

“Yea, just let me handle it, ok?” I said, slowly pushing his arm away from my body. Looking back, I could see the hurt in his face, but I was only trying to save him from what They might bring.

Turning back to meet the gaze of the piercing blue eyes I scream “What do you want!?”

“You know what I want.” He responded, stepping closer, placing his lips just below my ear, “I want you, Violet.”

“If I were you, I would keep my hands to myself, before someone breaks them off.” I promised, showing my teeth. This sent the boys in a fit of laughter. My ruthlessness seemed to entertain them.

“Vi, you don’t really mean that.” He said wrapping his arms securely around my waist, making it hard to escape.

Lowden stepped forward and shoved him with full force away from me, sending him stumbling back to his wingmen. “She said step off, man. Didn’t you get the message?”

The smug smile never left his face. This was fun for him. “Oh, little boy, you’re going to wish you never stepped foot in this club tonight.”
