The Ball
Everyone, yes, everyone, including me, was dressed in their best formal attires. The swirls of various colors barely make me recall the reason why we were all dressed like this.
Oh right, it was a ball. A formal ball. A ball where the girls just sit and the guys ask them to dance. Of course, there was a loophole in this statement.
Right now, I could see some girls excessively chatting between themselves by the punch bowl. To my left, I could see more girls talking to each other. To the right was the dance hall. And goodness knows whatever is happening behind me.
I never expected to have a guy dance with me that night. I was just there to have a bonus in my score. Apparently, the bonus would mean nothing since everybody else was there.
My classmate and I were sitting on the chairs laid out at the side. We wanted to follow the traditional method and wait for a guy to ask us to dance, which seemed quite unfair on their side – asking a girl to a dance without being beaten the hell out off is a dangerous and difficult task. We didn't even expect anyone.
“Miyuri-chan, I heard you've moved on. Tell me who the lucky guy is,” my classmate beside me pressed, apparently bored with the current ongoings.
I raised my pinky to my lip and told her,” That has to be for me to know and you to find out.”
I smiled casually at her, giving her credit for trying to break into my defenses.
Like hell I was going to tell anyone. The last time I did, news spread like wildfire thanks to a certain someone I know. I couldn't help but glare at her from across the hall.
She mimicked my action but used her index finger this time and said,”But whoever that guy is...you're pretty upset about liking him, are you?”
She gave a shrill laugh.
“I don't have any particular reason why I like him, okay? I just did,” anger bubbled and fizzed within me, like an unopened cola bottle being shaken. I clenched my fist.
In the background, I heard the violin version of 'Sakura Kiss'.
As I was busy debating with myself whether I should pursue the current conversation or not, an upperclassman, yes, I know he's an upperclassman due to the fact that I like him, walked up to my seat and held out his hand in front of me.
“May I have this dance?” he asked.
I quickly replied to him with a nod, leaving my classmate grumbling to herself.
I stood up, straightening my gown, and held his hand.
I was now wondering what made him decide to ask me to a dance.
Sakura Kiss had already ended and I could hear the music of the 'Waltz of Chihiro' sweeping in the dance floor.
Great, a waltz. Anyways, no worries, since the man must lead. I snickered to myself.
He casually placed a hand on my waist and I hesitantly placed my hand on his shoulder.
I wanted to let out an exasperated sigh but he was so good at dancing the waltz that I was swept off my feet, literally.
Sure, he already knew how to dance the waltz due to the unfavorable training during the Beauty and the Beast practices but surely, this was too much.
I began to follow in his rhythm, moving fluidly and flexibly as I did.
“You're a great dancer,” he commented.
I felt warmth creeping up my cheeks.
“And so are you,” I told him as he raised his hand and made me turn.
“May I ask?”
“Yeah?”
“Why is it that you decided to dance with me, Victor-senpai?” I asked him with the courage I had managed to keep.
“Well, Miyu-chan, wouldn't it be obvious?” he replied, holding in a smirk.
Flashbacks of recent events flooded my mind as he made me do a turn again.
“Miyuri-chan, Victor likes you.”
“You may not like him, but he likes you.”
“You don't have to be such an attention-whore to have her attention, Victor. Just go up to her and confess.”
“Oh, your dream girl is here, Vic.”
She shook her head in an attempt to shoo the evil thoughts away.
The music was growing fainter and Victor pulled me towards him, just as what the other dancers did.
“Because...I like you, Miyuri,” he whispered into my ear as the music came to an end.
-End-
(cliffhanger, I know...just stay tuned for a 'sequel'. That is, if I'm not lazy enough to update...)
