From a piece of big red paper, I cut a little heart.

I trimmed the edge with lace; the inside I filled with art.

Then I wrote my love letter with care, on a little quest.

Writing to someone, I believed deserved the very best.

“This Valentine,” I wrote, “I address to me.

No one else can send one like it, as you soon will see.

I wrote this little love letter to say, I like you just fine.

You’re the only one of me there is, so never cross that line.

Never change your hair to look like the girl you saw today.

Don’t try to talk and walk like her, do it your own way.

Promise you won’t flirt with him when there’s someone else you like.

He may be popular and strong and stuff, but he’s just not Mr. Right.

Try not to forget that tomorrow will be another day.

But work hard now and try your best, or later you will pay.

And when you think, “I hate myself!” and stomp and scream and cry.

Just think back, remember me, and know those voices lie.

You fall, and trip and hurt yourself, get up and try again.

You make mistakes, I know it’s true, but I am still your friend.

Don’t stand in the audience and throw fruit upon the stage.

Take the spotlight, you’re the star; come outside your cage!

Just remember, no matter what, I will always be there.

And when it seems like no one likes you, know that I still care.”

I signed this little Valentine, and hid it far away.

Between the pages of my favorite book, I don’t need it today.

But sometime in the future, Valentine’s Day or not,

When joy is a dream and peace forgot.

I’ll take out this little love letter and read it one more time.

And know that I can put all my faith, into this single rhyme
