A/n- a poem, free verse

Summary: This poem alludes to the many energy drinks (such as Rockstar, Monster, and the like) currently popular in today’s pop culture. They provide the drinker with a quick jolt of energy, heightening the senses and banishing fatigue, although the ‘high’ is usually short lived, leaving one drained and just as tired.

Libation

A dull and lazy afternoon-

Eyelids drooping down-

A hand, grasping cold and sweet relief-

Tall, with its shadow spreading

across

the

table.

As I pour,

sweet fizz bubbles up to cap the top of the glass,

nearly overflowing.

The smell- battery acid.

The taste- electrical cord.

But the thrill…

As

I

feel

the

liquid

coursing

through

me

my/mind/begins/to/race/and/my/hands/begin/to/shake/

I/cannot/stop/my/teeth/from/their/chatter

Like a rushing river through my veins

It sets upon me a fire I cannot quench

My thirst yearns for more

Colors once dull are so bright to me as my eyelids peal back into my skull. I watch as my mind races forward to leave my body behind.

A peaking rush of head swimming,

heart pumping,

pulse throbbing.

My lungs breathe emptiness, the rushing gone.

Only a dull throb remains.
