adult decisions

hushed voices; measured breathing
we can’t get caught
making “adult” decisions
not when there’s evidence
that you’re not a little boy
& i’m sure not a child
if only we could show them
that we can take care of each other

the consequences you took for us
i know you can’t handle them
the weight of your father
looking down on you
pushing you farther
down than gravity

i hope you still have a home
parents give up too easily
not realizing that inside
is a scared little boy
that’s trying to prove
that he’s worthy of being able
to stand on the same ground
