there i go again,
falling, falling, falling.
tripping over your smell
your arms
and glancing off your
plexiglas smile.

because
you were there when i
was so spectacular.
and although the other
compliments gave me
a little jolt of caffeine-like
energy,
after a few seconds, i’d
crash again and wait
impatiently for your figure
to appear.

you play in shadows, sweetie
but when you did turn up,
when you finally said
‘amazing’ and reached your
arms around me,
i felt complete, and content,
and my world of clichés
discovered a new hiding place.

somehow, the spotlights
seemed to shine a little
brighter, and my voice
became a little stronger,
and i wasn’t quite as nerve
wracked (although there
was the idea that
you were watching, and that
if i impressed you maybe
you would know me again)

but you’re still trapped
in a world of red and green,
and i, golden yellow,
can’t persuade myself
to bring you to your
senses.

wish you would come back
so i could linger in
your smile
and dance along
each laughing
glance.

but next year everything
will change for the better.

and i will never
stop being
an optimist.
