What Makes a Man?

What makes a man, a man?

Is it the strength to defeat a thousand foes, the power to kill with a single blow?

What makes a man, a man?

Is it the gentleness with which he caresses his beloved wife, the care with which he holds his newborn son?

What makes a man, a man?

Is it the roar in his throat as he shouts a challenge, the deep resonating that broadcasts his power?

What makes a man, a man?

Is it the calm voice he uses with erring young ones, the firm but gentle tone saved for the small and weak?

What makes a man, a man?

Is it the ferocity he summons when defending his claim, the might that can protect those he loves?

What makes a man, a man?

Is it the love with which he mends the broken, the chivalry to make right the wrongs?

What makes a man, a man?

Is it the storm of his anger that sends one scurrying, the rage that scares all into submission?

What makes a man, a man?

Is it the warm embrace where one feels utterly safe, the silent promise to protect one from all evil?

What makes a man, a man?

Is this a question with no solution, or is the answer everything?

For my dad; have a Happy Birthday and always know that I love you.
