Escape

I sprint through the fields,
running away from everything.

As I come up to my favorite place,
I sit down, close my eyes, and escape.

I lean against my favorite tree,
the one with all our marks and carvings.

I gently trace the indents,
being able to go back in time and escape.

I see us together,
no one but you and I.

I think about all the good times we’ve had,
breathe in the sweet air, and escape.

My mom calls my name,
breaking into my thoughts.

I look at her, down the hill,
and smile to myself.

I turn back to my favorite tree,
its branches flowing in the wind.

My smile broadens as I shut my eyes,
and, for one last time, I escape.
