He often wondered why he bothered,
all his efforts seemed so futile.
She never once
smiled in his direction.

Perhaps he was crazy
to hope for such a thing, but why not?
It had happened before.

He recalled other times,
when all he had to do
was whistle
and they came running.

Now, it seemed,
the magic was gone,
his slick ways no longer worked.

He knelt,
began to plead endlessly,
but she would have nothing
to do with him.

Her only answer
was the tip of her nose
as she turned it up with disdain.

His eyes blazed with anger; he cried out,
“How dare
you ignore me?!”

She did not reply,
only turned
and slowly walked away.

Gradually, his anger faded
as common sense returned.
When he decided
to dismiss her,
there was only one thought:

With luck,
he would find another -
one who was not so wild
and could be tamed.
