Yahdika - The Dream Portal
Chapter One - The Dream Catcher
It was a cold morning in Janaki; the soft white snow gently fell to the ground of the beautiful hilltops. The calm, morning sun barely peeked through the gloomy grey clouds which hung in the sky like wet rags. She couldn’t help but stare out her large bedroom window and gaze at the weather’s over night magic.
She sighed a long sigh, one of which was full of the utmost content that is until a loud buzzing noise to her left startled her somewhat. She flinched and quickly looked about, only to see her alarm clock making that awful screeching noise it utters every morning and for every morning to come until summer. Her peace and quiet was quickly being shattered as she gingerly laid her hand over her alarm clock, hushing up the little piece of technology.
“Kya, get out of bed you’re late!” her mother hollered from the hallway as she quickly flipped the light switch on. Kya quickly shut her eyes and tilted her head down, as if closing her eyes wasn’t enough to keep the light away.
“Coming,” Kya mumbled ever so softly as she rolled out of bed. Her long night shirt gently unfolded itself and rested just barely past her lower thighs. She stood in her room for a moment, rubbing sleep from her eyes, before she slowly and hesitantly began to get ready for the thing she dreaded most. School.

“It’s not that I hate school, Tahj, I just…” Kya slowly drifted off, tilting her head somewhat to catch a glance at her brown, worn snow shoes. She then quickly looked up at her friend Tahj, he being one of her closest friends.
He had a small, blissful smile on his face as the two walked in the calm snow out of their neighborhood. His thick, dark blonde hair waved somewhat in the cold breeze as he bit his bottom lip, looking as if he were in deep thought. He kept his eyes locked to the white ground underneath before glancing at the girl next to him. He grew confused after a few silent moments between the two. He cocked his head slightly, moving closer to her.
“Hmm? You just…?” Tahj questioned Kya calmly, his eyes full of caring.
Kya sighed softly and gently adjusted her bag over her shoulder. She could feel Tahj’s gaze locked onto her as the two walked through mounds of snow, where the baseball diamond used to be. Kya abruptly stopped walking, causing Tahj to somewhat lose his footing. He regained balance and stared at Kya with a small frown.
“I wish you were in my grade, Tahj,” Kya said with a small giggle, Tahj just smiled and shook his head before he shrugged.
“How come?” He said with a small laugh before Kya continued to walk. Tahj followed.
“Well, I kind of would like someone to sit with at lunch besides Lily and Kiki,” Kya said softly as she purposely kicked her feet about in the mushy snow.
“You only sit with Lily and Kiki?” Tahj said with a small frown, Kya just nodded. “Well, how come you don’t sit with anyone else? Don’t you have other friends, Kya?”
“Well, I do, but not ones that I’m close enough to invite them to eat lunch with me, you know? More like…acquaintances,” Kya explained.
“Sounds like you need to make more friends,” Tahj teased with a small chuckle as he nudged his friend, Kya just frowned and looked down. Tahj quickly shook his head and stepped closer to the young girl next to him before continuing, “No, that’s…I didn’t mean it that way,”
“I try to make more friends but I feel as if they don’t even give me a shot…A chance to show them who I am, they take one look at me, say a descent hello and leave…I mean, look at me!” Kya said loudly as she stopped and motioned towards herself, “What do you see? C’mon...You see some…art crazed dork, huh.”
Tahj stood for a second, staring at his best friend. She was wearing a comfy pair of pants, a pair of tattered shoes, and a brown zip-up jacket with a small, dark blue tank top underneath. He often wondered why she dressed so lightly while it was snowing, but she didn’t seem to mind.
Tahj felt his eyes slowly become glued to the girl in front of him. Kya’s hands were gently rested on her voluptuous hips, her long chestnut hair, which had climbed its way to her mid-back, was gently blowing in the winter breeze. Tahj suddenly felt as if he were in a trance, he often wondered why others around Kya never noticed her true beauty, both inner and outer. Not only was she a fun loving girl, she was very mature, and Tahj felt as if he were falling for her with every day that passed.
Just as he was about to let his eyes wander, Kya’s voice suddenly shattered his quiet.
“Well?” Kya said loudly, almost as if she were expecting a horrible reply from Tahj. Tahj just smiled, knowing his sweet, charming side always helped Kya feel better. He had come to know and love his soft sensitive side over the years of knowing Kya.
“Well,” Tahj said with a smile as he shook his head and stepped closer to Kya, “I see, a very pretty girl,” Tahj said softly, he stopped once he noticed Kya’s facial expressions go from an angry, almost disappointed look to that of pure joy, and somewhat shock. Tahj just smiled and continued, “I also see a very funny, fun loving girl, who wouldn’t want to be around you?”
Kya smiled softly and slowly began to fiddle her fingers; she looked down to the ground and heaved a small sigh.
“Y-you don’t mean that,” Kya said softly, letting a small frown slowly etch its way across her face in self-doubt. She was suddenly surprised to see Tahj step forward slightly. He pulled Kya into a warm hug, his arms wrapped tight around her upper waist. Kya instantly let out a small giggle and wrapped her arms around Tahj’s neck and shoulders.
“Yes I do,” Tahj said softly as he gently began to bury his nose into the soft material of the clothing on Kya’s shoulder. He slowly took a deep breath of her scent.
“Thanks Tahj,” Kya smiled before tightening her grip around her friend, “That means a lot,”
“It’s the least I can do,” Tahj beamed as he slowly pulled away from Kya. Kya just giggled as the two continued to walk.
“You know, you’re not half bad for a sixteen-year-old,” Kya said with a small smile as she attempted to drape her arm around Tahj’s shoulder, with this, a confused look quickly spread across her face, “You’re also getting very tall,”
“Yeah,” Tahj chuckled, “Either that or you’re getting short,” Kya instantly nudged Tahj before taking off down the large snow field, which led to their school.
“I’ll beat’cha,” Kya called over her shoulder, Tahj sighed softly and shook his head in a baffled manner.
“Man, the legs on that girl,” He said to himself with a small laugh before he quickly began to chase after her.
In time, he caught up to her, which caused an upheaval of loud laughter along with playful shoving and tossing of snowballs. The two were inseparable, best friends since their young childhood, and they planned to stay close friends for life no matter what happened.
After saying their goodbye’s to each other for the time being, Tahj and Kya went their separate ways. Tahj, being a tenth grader, was placed in a whole other portion of the school, along with the other ninth and tenth graders. Where as Kya, being a senior in high school, was with the upper classmen; the eleventh and twelfth graders.
Kya wanted to strangle whoever came up with the silly idea of separating upper classmen from the lower. As much as she loved Lily and Kiki, she felt as if hanging out with them wasn’t enough. She had to have Tahj’s random comments, funny gestures and sweet smile with her all the time, she felt. After all, he was her best friend.
“Poor Tahj,” Lily said with a small laugh, “He probably hates being with those other tenth graders, he’s too mature for his age, don’t you think?”
“Yeah,” Kya said softly as the two girls slowly walked through the halls of their high school. Both girls were now on their way to first hour; school tech for Lily and science class for Kya. Lily moaned softly, her shoulders slumped in dismay as both girls slowly approached room B208; school tech.
“Well, here I go,” Lily sighed as Kya slowly walked past her with a small grin.
“Have fun,” Kya said, in a slight sarcastic tone softly, with a small wave. Lily waved in return before disappearing into her classroom.
Kya slowly walked into her humid science classroom only to find a few of the older boys, in the far upper part of the class, picking on someone. Kya sighed softly and shook her head slightly in dismay as she took her seat; which was towards the back. Kya frowned and averted her attention towards the far left portion of the classroom, where the older boys stood, teasing the poor boy, shoving him and attempting to take his stuff.
Kya watched for quite some time, wondering where the teacher was to take care of the awful banter the older boys were putting on this one kid. Kya bit her bottom lip in concentration, wondering why the poor boy wasn’t sticking up for himself, let alone the others around him. It seemed like no one cared; as if no one wanted to help. Kya quickly stood in frustration, having seen this boy be picked on enough in the past.
“Hey,” Kya snapped as she came up to the older boys. The two or three of them turned around, all wearing skater hats, punk shirts and pants that sagged to their knees. Kya placed her hands on her hips and continued, “Go away, stop teasing him,” she said loudly as she stepped closer to the boys. She immediately noticed one of them holding was looked to be a dream catcher of some sort.
Knowing right off the bat that the dream catcher didn’t belong to this stupid thug, Kya quickly attempted to snatch it from him. She succeeded the second time around and held the little trinket close to her. She was relieved to see the teacher finally walk in the room and rummage around his desk. The two or three punks mumbled a few things to each other before slowly moseying to their seats.
Kya glared at them before quickly turning to the boy next to her. He was a descent looking young boy, in her grade obviously. He had black-brown hair that gently glistened with the calm lighting of the room, along with a few brown freckles that dotted his nose slightly. He stared down at his desk with a saddened look on his face; Kya couldn’t help but think how huggable he looked at the moment.
She smiled a soft smile and took a seat in front of him; she stared at him for a moment before speaking up.
“You shouldn’t let those boys push you around like that,” Kya said softly, fingering the soft material of the dream catcher she held in her hands. After a few seconds of silence, she looked up, only to see the boy in front of her still staring down at his desk, fiddling his fingers somewhat. A deep blush instantly began to spread across his face. Kya eyed him for a moment before softly smiling and holding the dream catcher out to him.
“This is yours, right?” Kya gently said, the boy looked up with an almost there smile as he took the dream catcher from Kya.
“Thanks,” he uttered softly, he then looked down at the dream catcher in his hands, not taking his eyes away from it.
“You’re welcome,” Kya said, a small frown spreading across her face. She didn’t bother asking his name, he didn’t seem too friendly at the moment; the teacher was also getting restless about how no one was in their assigned seats. Kya sighed and pushed herself to her feet before quickly taking her seat in the back.
She sat down promptly as she heaved yet another small sigh. The teacher quickly began to write all sorts of terms on the board, while attempting to get the class to get out a piece of paper to write notes along with him. Kya ignored the teacher, having been too curious about the boy sitting a few seats up and diagonal from her.
She tried so hard to remember his name, she knew in the past she’s heard it from the teacher once or twice. She knew it started with a ‘Y’ but nothing after that. She slowly began to study him, instead of the notes on the board.
He was a skinny person, with a little bit of muscle on him. He had somewhat black-brown hair that barely hung in his face, to the point where it border lined messy and descent. He was wearing a tattered pale green shirt along with khaki shorts that went to his knees.
Kya instantly became confused as to why he was dressed so lightly, it snowing outside and all. Although, he had a black coat laid over his pack, in a neat manner, which was on the floor next to him. Kya continued to let her eyes wander. She noticed he was still holding that dream catcher of his. Kya wondered what made it so special to him. Even though he didn’t put up a big fight to get it back, it looked as if it meant a lot to him.
It was a beautiful dream catcher. Real, light brown leather wrapped tight around the framing of the little trinket and delicate black feathers along with blue and gray beads hung from the ring of it. She found herself staring at the boy across the way, a small smile spreading across her face.

“What’s his name?” Lily questioned with her mouth slightly full of a mango. The two girls sat in a shady area to eat their lunch. Kya looked up in frustration.
“I wish I knew,” Kya said softly, “It’s been bothering me all day long.”
“Aww,” Lily started as she twirled her finger at Kya, “Looks like someone has a little crush,” Lily smiled as she took yet another bite out of her juicy mango.
“Wh-what?” Kya said n somewhat shock as she stared at Lily, “I don’t have a crush on him, I don’t even know him,” Kya said with a small giggle. She slowly glanced down at her soda, tapping her fingers on the aluminum she held.
I have to admit, he was pretty cute…
“Well,” Lily started eyeing her friend in a playful manner, “You should get to know him, Kya, who knows.”
“Oh?” Kya uttered, cocking her head somewhat.
“Well, it sounds like this boy doesn’t have many friends; you should talk to him more! I mean, you talked to him today, right?” Lily questioned, finishing off her mango.
“I only said a few things to him, a few other boys were picking on him,” Kya said softly, looking down at her diminishing soda.
“People were picking on him?” Lily questioned with a small frown. Kya just nodded, “How come? Is he nerdy?” Lily said with a small laugh, Kya giggled.
“No, he’s not nerdy,” Kya laughed, “I don’t know, he had a dream catcher with him that the other boys were teasing him about, I think,”
“A dream catcher?” Lily questioned.
“Yeah, it was really pretty,” Kya smiled, “And soft,” she added.
“I wonder why he had a dream catcher at school,” Lily said in a confused manner as she began to rummage through her bag.
“Iono,” Kya mumbled, “Oh well, I guess it’s nothing worth worrying about, huh,”
“Yeah,” Lily sighed.
Suddenly, a girl from around the corner popped out of nowhere, a huge grin on her face and her expressions lit up like the sunshine. Her brilliant blonde hair flipped about as she cavorted with much happiness to her two friends.
“Hey guys, TGIF, eh?” Kiki, a good friend of Kya and Lily, said loudly as she stood next to the two.
“Hey, Kiki,” Kya said with a smile.
“Kiki, you’re till coming over, right?” Lily questioned with a smile as she stood and adjusted her bag over her shoulder.
“Yep,” Kiki beamed as Kya slowly stood with a small groan. There was a sudden loud noise that echoed around the school for a few seconds. The bell. Kya drained out her long groan
even further before bending over and picking up her bag. Lily and Kiki said their good-byes to Kya before heading to 6th hour. The second to last hour of the school day.
Kya smiled and waved to her two friends before heading to her classroom. She couldn’t understand why she kept thinking about that one boy and his dream catcher. She frowned softly, thinking of how badly it gave her a stomach ache the more and more she thought about it. Her thoughts continued to trail as she made her way to English class.
The last portion of the day slugged by ever so slowly. Kya groaned softly and laid her head on her desk. She felt as if the last five minutes of last hour were tragically slow, especially on a Friday. She sighed and slowly closed her eyes, simple thoughts eventually trailed to first period this morning.
She was so confused as to why that boy stuck to her mind like glue. That dream catcher of his was so intriguing, and she could’ve sworn she caught glimpse of his eyes. She felt as if his eyes were the cause of her worrying. She had a big inkling that past those big, deep emerald orbs lie a secret. And the fact that he was so quiet only made Kya wonder further. The whole possessiveness over a dream catcher also made the situation more confusing.
Kya’s eyes instantly shot open as she jumped slightly in shock. She then let a smug look quickly spread across her face as she cocked her head slightly to look at the big, red bell hanging on the wall to the right of her. It rang for a few seconds more before coming to an abrupt stop. Kya felt as if she were running out of air from sighing so much.
Kya slowly moseyed out of her classroom and put a small smile on her face, though, knowing very well that it was time to go home for the weekend to relax. This also meant she got to hang out with Tahj some. Just as the thought of him entered her mind, he appeared from around the corner with a smug look on his face. He was holding a slightly crumpled piece of paper. Kya’s happy expression slowly fell to sad as Tahj trudged up to her. He didn’t hesitate to lean close to her and lay his head on her shoulder softly.
Kya frowned and quickly wrapped her arms around Tahj’s neck and shoulders, pulling him closer to her, into a warm hug.
“Aww, Tahj, what happened?” Kya questioned softly as everyone in the halls headed for exits all around. It quickly went from noisy to quiet in a matter of a few minutes. Kya held Tahj
close to her within that time, until things were quiet. Tahj slowly pulled away with a frown and handed Kya the crumpled paper he held. Kya eagerly took it, only to open it and see a big fat ‘F’ written in red at the top of his English test.
“My mom’s going to kill me…” Tahj said softly as he looked down and scratched his head. Kya shook her head and stepped closer to Tahj, she gently rubbed his arm in a caring manner.
“Tahj, I’m sorry,” Kya said with a frown, “Hey, maybe I could tutor you,” Kya quickly said in a cheerful voice, Tahj looked up with a weary smile.
“I’d like that,” He said softly as the two slowly began to stroll down the deserted hallway, towards the double doors at the other end which led to the big open field outside.
“Cheer up,” Kya smiled in an encouraging manner as she pushed out the double doors. Cold wind gently wisped past the two as they headed out of school grounds. The two walked for a few minutes in silence together. The calm noon sun peeked through grey clouds that once draped over the sky in the early morning. Kya spoke up after the two were a good distance away from their high school.
“I’ve had my fair share of F’s, Tahj, it’ll be okay,” Kya smiled gently as she fell close into step with Tahj, “We’ll bring your grade up, don’t worry.”
With this, Tahj looked up at her with a small smile. He stared at her for a few seconds, feeling as if time had frozen. He didn’t know what it was about her that made his every nerve ending swim… Maybe it was the look of her soft brown eyes gazing back at him in the most loving manner ever possible, her gentle, soothing voice, her delicate touch. He couldn’t put his finger on it, but he felt very sure that this wasn’t just any normal girl he was best friends with. He knew deep down, his feelings for Kya couldn’t stay secret for long.
Just as he felt as if Kya’s gentle eyes were now glued to his, he forced himself to look away, feeling his face heat up slightly.
“Thanks, Kya,” Tahj said softly, slipping his mitten hands into his coat pockets.
“You’re welcome,” Kya smiled as she gazed up to the brilliant Janaki sky. She sighed softly, feeling a little bit better from her day. She didn’t know what it was about helping others feel better, but she felt as if it made her feel better too. The more she gave, the more she gained just by being kind and loving.
“You okay?” Tahj asked with a small smile, Kya glanced at him slowly.
“Mhmm,” She mumbled ever so softly, “My day was weird,” she added with a small giggle. Tahj cocked his head slightly.
“How so?” He questioned.
“Well,” Kya started, “I met this one guy in first hour, and I can’t stop thinking about him,” Kya said as she looked down to hers and Tahj’s feet as they walked.
Tahj instantly felt his heart sink. He frowned and stared at Kya, feeling his heart break further at the plain fact that she didn’t like him the way he liked her. He knew it too. The way she acted around him and other guys was totally different and in plain view that she only pictured Tahj as a close friend. Tahj tried so hard not to roll his eyes and look away. He controlled his emotions for the time being and forced himself to ask her further about ‘this one guy’.
“Why?” Tahj asked in a short manner.
“Well, when I came into class, there were a few other boys picking on him, I went over to help him out,” Kya explained, Tahj listened unwillingly, “Turns out those two or three guys took the boy’s dream catcher,” Kya said with a small giggle.
“Dream catcher?” Tahj said as he eyeballed Kya, she nodded.
“Yeah, so I gave it back to him, he said a simple thanks and we went on with the class,” Kya said softly. Tahj raised one eyebrow, already in an annoyed mood, and looked about.
“Heh, who would bring a dream catcher to school?” Tahj asked with a small chuckle, Kya shrugged.
“Obviously he does, I want to know why though, and it’s been bothering me all day. He seemed so secretive about his dream catcher…It was such a pretty dream catcher, I wonder what it was for,” Kya dragged on, “I told Lily about it but she thinks it’s a little weird, too,”
“I think you’re reading too much into this, Kya,” Tahj said quickly, “It’s just a dream catcher, maybe he was going to give it to his girlfriend or something,” He said in a cocky manner. Kya eyed him for a moment.
“Maybe,” She said softly before looking about her surroundings. Snow trees were now more abundant as they neared their neighbor hood.
“I’m just curious,” Kya giggled, “I’m going to see if I can get at least a name out of him on Monday, he seems like an interesting person,” Kya said with a smile. Tahj sighed quietly and looked down, Kya instantly noted his annoyed tone and turned to him, hoping to switch his mood.
“So, you want to come to my house tomorrow to study?” Kya smiled, “I can make those cookies again,” She giggled, causing Tahj to smile slightly.
“Sure thing,” He said calmly, Kya smiled and instantly began to gently skip towards her house, which was just a little bit a ways from Tahj’s house. The other side of the street, to be more specific.
“See you then, Tahj,” She called with a smile as she neared her house. Tahj sighed and stopped in the snow. He watched Kya skip in the thin layer of snow, her chestnut hair gently flicked about and glistened in the calm sunshine of the day.
“Okay,” Tahj said, only audible to himself. He then sighed and turned slightly, in the direction of his house. In a matter of seconds, he made his way through the snow, into his home.
“Tanvi!” Kya called as she stepped into the house and quickly began to take off her worn snow shoes.
Suddenly, a big white blob, bursting around the corner, came the playful Tanvi. She pranced in a joyful manner, tongue dangling out of her mouth, tail waging like a propeller on a speed boat. She instantly lunged onto Kya, who was sat on the cold tile of the entry way, just before the living room, in attempt to take her shoes off. Kya fell backwards with a small laugh as she pet her loving companion, Tanvi.
“Geez, Tanvi, we need to get another dog for you to play with, you have too much energy, sweetie,” Kya smiled as she stood and pet Tanvi’s soft head.
She gazed down at her pet. Tanvi was a beautiful pure bred Siberian husky, with fur as white as the snow outside, and eyes as clear as blue diamonds. Kya smiled and Tanvi continued to wag her tail in excitement, pure joy seemed to flow out of her. She seemed ecstatic to see Kya after the hours that she was gone.
Kya smiled and slowly began to make her way to her room, which was just down the hall, last room on the left. She pushed her way into her room and quickly set her burlap school bag on her bed. Tanvi quickly followed, nosing her way through Kya’s room; her tail wagged in a quick and happy manner.
Kya sighed softly and sat down at her desk, she then slowly opened her laptop, hoping to see if her friends were online or not. She checked in a quick manner, only to find no one on.
“Of course,” Kya said loudly, “It’s Friday night, what was I thinking?” Kya sighed as Tanvi slowly made her way over to her owner. She laid her head in Kya’s lap in a loving manner. She then whimpered softly as Kya gently stroked her head.
“I guess it’s just you and me tonight, huh Tanvi,” Kya smiled as she glanced about her room. She instantly noticed, hanging by her window, her authentic dream catcher.
Kya felt her heart stop as she stared at it, dangling in the calm sunshine of the day. The pretty blue beads glistened softly as the little dream catcher wavered back and forth in the gentle winter breeze. She quickly began to think about how much she had been thinking of the simple dream catcher from this morning. She felt as if it were almost getting out of hand, she was thinking into it way too much. She knew the little dream catcher didn’t mean much…
It didn’t as far as she knew…
