Emelina
found her a few hours later, after the hubbub had subsided, eyes
closed, body relaxed, the cards still hidden in her clothing. She was
buried near Wild Bill Hickok, an unmarked grave. Over the years
people came to view the final resting place of the famous gunfighter
who died holding the deadman’s hand; but, no one stopped to look at
the tiny headstone beside it, where a pale hand rested lightly
against a saloon girl’s ruffled bodice, guarding a hand of cards:
two black aces, two black eights and the jack of diamonds- the
deadman’s hand.
