2The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep

2The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. 3The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice." John 10:2-5

This verse tells us that we, as God's sheep, do in fact know His voice. It also says that we will follow Him because we know His voice. What an amazing thought to know that we are capable of being guided by the Shepherd's voice! In Old Testament times, God literally spoke to the people. But now, when we talk about hearing God's voice, we're referring to that little voice inside of your head, commonly known as your conscience. Your conscience is actually the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of you, telling you right from wrong and guiding you along the paths you should take

"For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say." Luke 12:12
"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-- the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you." John 14:16-17

What exactly does it take to hear God's voice? The bible tells us two simple factors in hearing His voice.
1) John 8:47 tells us that we must belong to God in order to hear His voice.
2) Revelation 3:20 tells us that we have to choose to hear God's voice. When he knocks on the door and calls out to you, you have to choose to open the door and listen to Him.
Something to think about is this as well...Just as you get to know a friend, you begin to recognize their voices. Well the same goes for God. The more you get to know Him and spend time with Him, the easier it becomes to recognize His voice and actually listen to Him.

The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 1 Kings 19:11-13

As humans, we tend to ask God for an answer to a prayer, question, or complaint, but then we expect a huge answer. We always look for something big, miraculous, or life changing. But, as the verse explained, God's voice came in a small whisper. How many times do we look for a huge sign from God, and then miss His small whisper?
God's voice can be a verse in the Bible, advice from a godly friend, or just a small whisper from your conscience. So are you willing to stop looking for a huge miraculous sign and start listening for that small whisper?
