Word Count: 831 words
Prologue:
What, exactly, does being poor mean? Does it require you to be in rags living in a cardboard box in a dark and scary alleyway? A hobo? Or something that means you don't have a lot of money but still do not have pocket money?
If the correct answer is the money-less pocket, then that probably makes me poor.
My name's Duangrat Jaimeraliterial, but as seeing as 90 of the population can't even read it, nonetheless pronounce it, my school shortened my whole name with the alias Donna Jay. Currently, I'm a 14 year old and turning 15 a month into freshman year which starts two months from now. I like ice cream, cooking, volleyball, the internet, and classical music. I dislike several things including wonna-be's, bugs of all sorts, and viruses. Hobbies include piano, graphic designs, drawing, and studying.
Oh, and walks on the beach are nice, too.
But, seriously, nevermind that. My life is very hectic, to say the least. My first breath on in Bangkok, Thailand on September 13th, 1993. According to my mom, my dad was in major debt because of his gambling habits-- of course, she didn't know that when she married him-- and the best decision at the time was to flee to the US and get the money.
And so we did.
I can still remember the American fly attendant ogling my brother and me then practically throwing paper and crayons at us because we looked bored.
We decided to move to Canada first due to the fact that our english was very poor, and so we hired (for very low pay, may I add) until we knew the basics and could survive. The teacher, Vicky, told us if we went to Florida there were a lot of Thai restaurants, with Thai-speaking owners, who would probably hire us. So, we went there next.
I can't say that Florida was the best experience in my life. My brother and I did not learn a lot of the english that Vicky taught our parents so we were limited to 'hello,' 'how are you?,' 'good,' and 'I'm fine.' However, with my mom working her ass off everyday, and our father who was desperately looking for work, we were thorn into Widow Leaf's Pre-K Center.
That school was very odd, indeed. They had a lower class and an upper class as they called it. But, now that I think about it, The lower class was probably 'normal class' and the upper class was probably the 'help class' seeing as the only Thai siblings there had no idea what the heck the other people were saying.
In between then and 1st grade, we (my brother and I) met a fellow Thai that was our age, her mother being my mom's high school friend. We quickly became aquatinted and we called each other either brother or sister.
To say the least, those were the worst times of my life. Tim (or Timothy Jay my brother's alias) and I never saw my parents for 2 years since being a co-worker brought us only enough money to pay our bills, so our parents moved to Indiana to build a restaurant leaving us with our newly found sister, Alita Chang (the sister from earlier).
The summer before our 2nd grade year, we moved to Indianapolis, Indiana with our parents. I remember asking my dad, "where's the snow?" And all he did was laugh at me. He laughed!
I'm just going to summarize even further. We ended up going to a St. Mary Catholic School, due to our parent's paranoia and fear of us being picked on in a public school. As our restaurant, Thai Smile, prospered, so did our living arrangements. From living all in the same room in an apartment, to a rented one story house: two people per room, to a bought one story house with: our own rooms, to a bought two story house with everyone's own room and dad's personal office, to a bought three story house: separate rooms, a person office, movie theatre, breakfast nook, and basement.
Thai Smile was known throughout the whole town and we were rich. Both my brother and I worked at the restaurant and received about 350 a week plus tip. But, when we turned 13 everything started to change. Our dad started to go to casinos more and more often and he went to Thailand about 6 times without us, and dare I say it? He cheated on my mom with 3 different girls. Two girls from Thailand and one that was working at Thai Smile Sub (by this time, we had two different locations; a main and a sub).
My mother was fought up and we moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.
And, finally, this brings us to the present and I only have one question...
Will my family be okay?
AU: I forgot to mention that when Donna and Timothy first entered 2nd grade (moved to Indiana) that they were around 7 years old :)
