I never make eye contact with our biology teacher, or at least I try not to. I hated it when he looked at me like that. “How many?” Sarah asked me yet again. I looked back down into the microscope, counting the cells we had.

“Hold on. I’m still counting.” I mumbled, still looking into it. I could feel his eyes on me.

“Look, do you want me to count them? It’s been five minutes already. Everyone else is already on the second page of the worksheet.”

I pulled back from the microscope and sat back in my chair, “Whatever.” I grabbed a pen, took the paper out of her hand and waited for her to tell me the information.

Sarah sighed, “Girl, I don’t know what’s been going on lately, but you need to tell me.”

“I’m fine.” I said, rolling my eyes. Sure she was my best friend, but sometimes she would be just too nosey.

“Twenty-five.” Sarah said after a few seconds. I wrote it down, not taking my eyes off the paper. It was like I could feel his gaze on me. I dared not look up – our eyes would meet. “Turn the page.” Sarah’s voice rang in my ear.

I shook my head, “sorry,” and did as I was instructed. I looked at the next page; now we had to draw the cells and label the parts in them. Sarah began talking but somehow I wasn’t being able to catch what she was saying until the last part.

“I… think we have a plant cell. You see the cell wall- Kristie!”

“What?” I looked up to her.

“Girl, I’ve been asking you questions. You haven’t answered one of them!” she whispered angrily. “What is the deal, girl?”

“I... I…” I stuttered; I wasn’t really sure. I mean, I know the teacher was bugging me but it was like I was in a trance or something.

“Tell me later. Just work on this for now, okay?” Sarah put her arm around me, squeezing me a little then began talking again. “Write down that it is definitely a plant cell. Now, draw a box with kind of squiggly lines as sides; that will be the cell wall. Go ahead and label it, then…” Sarah’s voice kept talking, and I was drawing what she told me to, but my thoughts kept drifting back.

My dreams of late had been very strange, as if my subconscious mind was trying to warn me of some future danger. I recall having dreams like this before; luckily they weren’t as bad as they were last time it happened to me. I was worried of course, since last time those nightmares had definitely warned me of great tragedy in my life; the death of my twin sister.

I jumped; the bell startled me. I quickly wrote our names on the front and handed it to Sarah. “Why can’t you give it to him?” Sarah asked, “You know I have to go to band, I can’t stay long at all.”

“Please-” I began, but I knew it was pointless. My fears were completely stupid; it wasn’t like it would happen again, the possibility of that was way under one percent, “Alright, I’ll see you after school.”

As she ran out the classroom with other students walking out as well, I packed my books slowly. I hoped that if I could turn it in right as I was leaving, I would have less time to look at him, which meant less time for him to look at me as well. I put my book sack on my back and grabbed my laptop case, hesitantly taking the worksheet and walked up to his desk quickly. I only had two minutes left to get to my next class, so I quickly dropped it on his desk and ran out the room. I heard him call my name, but I ignored it. There was no way I was going back there; it was bad enough I had Mr. Kenneth first hour of every day.
