Only Ghosts Remain

By Stephanie Bell

Will you remember

When the years have passed,

And the time goes by

Much too fast?

Stare out the window,

Lay in the grass,

Another year

Has come to pass.

We play in the schoolyard,

And skip through the street,

With innocent minds

And dancing feet.

We go out on dates,

And break every rule,

Dreaming of the days

When we’re free from school.

Stare out the window,

Lay in the grass,

Another year

Has come to pass.

Church bells are ringing,

Babies are crying,

We’re growing older,

But we’re far from dying.

I miss you sometimes,

As I watch my kids play,

The sparkle in their eyes,

And the things that they say.

Stare out the window,

Lay in the grass,

Another year

Has come to pass

Grey hairs are sprouting,

Eyesight is jading,

But my visions of you

Are never fading.

Our children’s children

Laugh and sing,

But do you remember

Anything?

Stare out the window,

Lay in the grass,

Another year

Has come to pass.

Memories fade

And we turn to dust;

Only ghosts remain

Of the two of us.

Stare out the window,

Lay in the grass,

Another year

Has come to pass
