Friday
Ain’t What It Used To Be
Friday nights just don’t seem to have that spark anymore. It was a day after my birthday and Adora decided to fly us out of the country to celebrate since I failed to tell her the day before. Our current dates, Jeffrey and Kobe, came along with us claiming to want to only enjoy spending time with their favorite women.
The dating pool for those over 25 was indeed overflowing with potential but for some odd reason, my friend and I were receiving the bad batch.
Kobe was an energetic Mediterranean boy who looked around my age but was actually 24. He had been dating Adora for a week now but I could tell the relationship wasn’t holding strong. The boy was a heavy drinker and unlike most boys, he would constantly like to admit his attraction to pregnant women. Adora wasn’t pregnant.
As for dimwit number 2, Jeffrey, was 27 years old and just as lively. He enjoyed playing pool and gambling, was an excellent fisherman and wasn’t so bad in the looks department. The only problem I had with Jeffrey was that he was very clingy. I couldn't even cough without him asking if some guy got me sick. I’m exaggerating of course but you get the idea.
My birthday week in the Bahamas had come to a close and we were currently waiting in the airport lobby. As soon as we entered the place, the boys immediately complained of being tired and we had to rest before grabbing our next flight which was scheduled to leave in 35 minutes.
We sat near a gift shop drinking smoothies and tried to produce some interesting small talk. Jeffrey flung his muscular arm over my shoulder and shook me.
“That was pretty fun, wasn’t it babe?”
I grimaced whenever he called me that. It always sounded perverted when he said it and the fact that he was a heavy breather didn’t help.
“It was okay. But I don’t think I’m going to bring you with me anymore.”
“Why not?” He pouted stroking my hair a little too hard. My hair had grown longer and I spend quite a bit of time curling it. He was messing it up.
“Because you're loud, disrespectful and I believe a little prejudice.”
“Prejudice? How can I be prejudice if I’m dating you?”
Personally I thought he was just a gold-digger. “You were making fun of their culture and saying how much you liked the American culture better.”
“That doesn’t mean anything.”
“It does if you say it loud enough for everyone in a restaurant to hear.”
Jeffrey sighed and bounced his leg admitting defeat. Kobe laughed at him. “Oh, you just got served!”
Adora slapped her forehead at the man’s immaturity. “You aren’t any better.”
“What do you mean?”
“You were teasing the elderly. It wasn’t prejudice but it was rude”
Kobe threw up his hands. “It was funny! That one old guy was taking forever to go down those stairs if I didn’t scare him he would have been there all day.”
Jeffrey laughed with him but said nothing.
“That man could have fallen, Kobe.” Adora frowned punching him in the arm.
The boys continued to laugh and I was getting irritable. As soon as I step off the plane to America, I’m dumping Jeffrey’s ass like it was nothing special and that’s pretty sad because it’s quite nice to look at.
The male laughing fit was still rattling on and I bit my straw hoping someone else would come and pull me away. But since no one came I had to take it upon myself to leave the area.
“Woah. Babe where you going?” Jeffrey grabbed my elbow.
“To the bathroom. Don’t follow me.”
Adora shot up and rushed over to me. “You are not leaving me with these two.”
“I’ll be back. Just ignore them. Freak them out.” I waved my hands in a sarcastic fashion.
Adora smiled at it. “Just hurry up, okay?”
“Okay.” I walked away from her feeling a little guilty for not pulling her along with me. But my bladder was calling the shots.
“It was funny.” I quietly mocked Kobe’s previous retort while washing my hands. “Geez,it isn’t going to be so funny when Adora dumps your behind.”
I grumbled and tossed a paper towel in the trash. Heading out the bathroom door, I flinched running straight into a man passing by with a briefcase. He held my shoulders and stopping my face from smacking into his chest.
“Oh, sorry love.” He smiled looking down at me with hospitable eyes.
I returned the smile sheepishly and muttered a ‘sorry’ before focusing back on rescueing Adora from our dates.
“Excuse me.” I added slipping by him.
But as the distance between us grew farther and farther apart, something told me to turn around and sure enough the man I bumped into was staring back at me feet away. People hustled past us and the memories of yesteryear came flickering back like a teleprompter. Tall, slick jet black hair, stormy gray eyes and a youthful handsome face was becoming all too significant. I stood completely still as all the noise around me silenced.
“No way.” The words escaped my lips just as Adora grabbed my arm making me jump.
“Hey!” She raised an eyebrow. “You okay?”
I turned back to the man only to find he had vanished. “Uh yeah. Where are the guys?”
Adora sighed. “At the food court spending our money. You really need to keep an eye on Jeffrey.”
I smiled shaking my head and began walking with her. “Whatever. Let’s just hope we aren’t late for our flight.”
