pieces on a chessboard –
we look over squares of black and white,
and I blink,
more than a bit disconcerted,
because no matter how many times you teach me,
I can’t recall the rules of the game.
maybe if you’d make the first move;
but no,
that’s always my job,
isn’t it?
still, I watch the board
and never know how to begin.
