Little Brother

You should have never…

Never left me this way.

But when they said

It had to be…

Sorry.

I

Just

Couldn’t

See

Why…why?

It’s not my fault,

Love doesn’t kill!

But I promised to protect you,

And now you lie still.

Please.

Get

Up.

Memories flash

In front of me

And I see a future for you

That should have been,

But will never be.

Your wounds wouldn’t heal,

Now neither will mine,

You’ll stay eternally real

Throughout my lifetime.

I look in the mirror:

See your eyes that cry.

Eyes only half complete

That watched the other half die.

Little Brother,

No one loved you more.

I was your shoulder to cry on,

I’d pick you up off the floor.

Whenever you need it –

Any time or place;

I’d

Do

Anything

For

You.

People used to say

I could go it alone,

Stride out by myself,

That I could cope on my own.

Those people were wrong.

They couldn’t see

Two halves make a whole,

Forever, you and me.

But when the car hit

We were split at the seams,

And now I’m bound to this World

With my nightmarish dreams.

In your last hours

I stayed by your side.

I held your hand

Until you…

Just as you left

You caught my eye.

Your gaze said, “Big brother,

Try hard not to cry.”

But try as I might

These tears still fall,

They beg for you…

Little Brother,

I can’t believe in ‘good bye’.

This is one of my oldest poems, I wrote it when I was...14 I think. I'm not sure why I wrote it from the point of view of an older brother, rather than sister, but I like it this way. Just an extra note - my brother didn't really die. I was trying to put myself in that place, trying to understand how it must feel. Sorry to the people I may have already confused over this.
