AN: Something that came to me last night, when I had writer's block on "Chasing Dreams".
It was a cold, dark night, lit only by the few stars that were visible through the canopy of the trees. Tonight was a new moon, as it had been agreed when this rendezvous had been arranged. In a clearing, a solitary woman paced back and forth, impatiently waiting. Her hair fluttered in the wind, and her wings stretched out behind her, as if she were ready to take flight. Her name was Kira, and she was a demon of the Underworld.
On the far side of the clearing, another figure came into view. This one seemed to have an unearthly glow, illuminating the area around her.
“You’re late, Lucille.”
“I do apologise. I had a few things to take care of before I could leave.”
“So obsessed with your duties, you angels.” The voice was filled with bitterness, as though a long history existed between the two. They approached each other, meeting in the middle of the open space. Two winged women, opposites in almost every way, physically. One light, one dark. Even their clothes reflected their natures. Lucille was clad in a flowing gown of white, blonde hair tumbling down her back, as befitted an angel. Kira was dark, her dress short and black, with a pair of heeled boots on her feet. The only similarity, bar their identical heights, were the eyes. Purest emerald green, fringed with thick lashes.
“I do hope you’re planning on making up for being late properly.”
“Of course, Kira.”
The demon laughed, harshly, burying her hands in Lucille’s hair. “You’d better,” she hissed, before bringing their lips together in a fierce kiss.
…………………
A long history did indeed exist. They’d known each other many years ago, aeons ago, when both had been human. They’d been close childhood friends, before the innocent relationship had given way to love, in their adulthood. It had been considered unnatural for two women to engage in such activities together, and a curse had been placed upon them before they were burned at the stake. They were cursed never to know true happiness until their sins had been atoned for. As the fire was lit, the human Kira had cried out, “You will never make me regret my actions. We have done nothing wrong.”
Lucille’s reaction had been rather different. “We are sorry for any distress we have caused, but not for having feelings we are unable to control.”
It had been these statements that had separated then after death. Kira had been cast into the Underworld, to become a demon, preying on the innocent, uncorrupted souls of humans. Lucille had joined the ranks of the angels; which, it turned out, was not nearly as glorious as the stories all children knew claimed it would be.
After a few years of this existence, they’d both worked out that they could, for a few hours at a time, reside on Earth. A chance meeting, in this very forest, had led to the current arrangement being agreed upon. It was easiest to travel to Earth when the moon was either new or full, so this was very quickly decided. The arrangement was far from satisfactory, but it was the best that could be managed. A few hours, twice a month, was far better than never seeing each other again.
Kira took no risks in coming here, but Lucille needed to be wary. If it were discovered that she was meeting a demon, let alone the things they did together, she would be cast out, would become a fallen angel, the lowest of the low. These forlorn figures were so despised that even the Underworld rejected them. However, it was a risk she was prepared to take, in order to see Kira, the only person she’d ever loved.
…………………
They made a very strange sight, the two unearthly creatures in the clearing. Arms around each other, making use of their wings to hover above the damp grass. They didn’t feel the cold, and probably wouldn’t have even if they’d been human; so involved with each other that such trivial matters went entirely unnoticed.
Lucille’s head was buried between Kira’s thighs, hands gripping her hips to ensure the demon stayed still. Not that the restraint was proving too successful, as Kira writhed and squirmed due to Lucille’s actions. When she cried out in pleasure, the movement ceased for a few moments, after which she pulled Lucille up so they were face to face, kissing again.
“I always feel as though I’m corrupting you when you do that, my innocent angel.”
“You aren’t. I’m far from innocent and we both know it, Kira.”
They both dressed, collecting the clothes that had been so carelessly abandoned earlier. There was no time for the customary fooling around, hindering each other, tonight – they had only a few minutes left on Earth, as a result of Lucille being late.
“Until next time, Kira.”
“Two weeks, Lucille.”
Both took off into the darkness, disappearing from view long before they should have done – magic of some sort was clearly involved in returning them both to the places they now called home.
…………………
“So, you finally return.”
“Like it matters to you whether I’m here or not.”
“Now, now, Kira. I’m just curious about where you go and who you meet, that’s all. Wouldn’t want your little friend to get into trouble now, would we?”
“Why should I tell you anything?”
“I could show you a much better time than she ever could.”
Kira simply sneered and walked away. It wasn’t the first time Ciarán had propositioned her, and it almost certainly wouldn’t be the last.
…………………
A moonlit, warm summer’s night, and Lucille approached the clearing. It was bathed in moonlight, and she could immediately see that Kira had not yet arrived. She would wait until the last possible moment, Lucille knew, as all demons had an aversion to spending too much time in the light. Scanning the area once more, she settled down on a fallen tree trunk, half in the shadows, to wait. Before long, Kira had arrived, walking out of the forest just behind Lucille.
“I should warn you, I think someone has been spying on us.”
“Who, Kira?”
“A demon by the name of Ciarán, who has something of a vendetta against me because I refused his advances more times than I care to remember.”
Having lived within the immortal realm for so long, Lucille knew that it was highly unusual for any demon to turn down an offer of sex, no matter who it came from.
“Who is this Ciarán?”
“The younger son of our king, which makes him a prince, technically. As the younger son, though, he has all the responsibilities and none of the rights, so he tries to dominate the rest of us. He didn’t take the rejection well.”
“What did you say to him?”
“That I was already committed to someone, and I had no intention of being unfaithful.”
“You always were confrontational.”
“Did you think I’d have changed my mind in all this time?”
“No, my love. I didn’t.”
Lucille took Kira’s hand, urging her to step forwards into the light. Suppressing a shiver, Kira did so, falling into Lucille’s embrace.
On moonlit nights, their joining was slower, softer, as shown by the gentle, teasing kiss they shared. This time, though, they would not get any further than this, as two shimmering angels appeared, wrenching Lucille away from her demonic lover.
“Kira!”
A slap across the face sent Lucille reeling, wings flapping furiously to keep her upright.
“You are charged with consorting with demons. The act has been witnessed and you will soon be sentenced accordingly.”
“I’m as guilty as she is, if not more. If you’re going to banish her, then send me too.”
“Kira, shut up,” Lucille hissed, but it was too late.
“Very well, demon, you will follow her into banishment. I pronounce that you shall live one mortal lifespan, here on Earth. That begins now, as you are no longer welcome in the immortal realm for any reason. You will be stripped of your powers, and will live and die as the humans do. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes, my lord, you do.” Lucille murmured her reply, while Kira acted as though she hadn’t heard a word of the sentence.
“Then so it shall be.”
…………………
It was some time before Kira and Lucille awoke, dressed in rags and clinging tightly to each other. Though they were now mortal, they still possessed many thousands of years worth of memories.
“Don’t you find it ironic that our so-called punishment is exactly what we wanted all those years ago; a lifetime together?”
“Immortality is overrated, I’d much rather have this.”
“So would I, Lucille. So would I.”
Hand in hand, they wandered through the familiar forest, heading for a village which they knew was nearby, where they might be able to find food, new clothes and jobs, none of which they had needed to worry about for aeons. A new life lay ahead of them, and they planned to make the most of it.
