Oh The Gloom!
The hills are cold in the distance,
Cold in a darkening mist,
The same one we are racing against.
I thought that we could outrun it,
Make it to London, safe in the light,
But the gloom is coming down and the clouds
Long been oppressive, are sinking
Down to join the darkness that shall come
Over you and I.
The trees stand tall like we could have done.
But I would have hated being manacled,
With you opposite always,
Opposite in every way,
We would remain blighted, still,
It goes on, I suppose.
Some existence, yes?
I don’t know what to do with us now,
Everything is unfamiliar,
You would have been familiar in this blankness.
But I went to far with my disclosures.
What was I thinking?
Or was it just wanting?
My train is further delayed, unlike the night,
Setting early, the day gone too soon.
I told you too early.
At least out of the station’s covering it is lighter,
Briefly. Briefly you could make me happy,
But it’s dark enough for the houses to need lights;
We’d need help. We wouldn’t survive.
I’m going to miss my connection,
Miss my chance to connect.
But I tried, with you I did try.
There is pink on the horizon, and still blue in the sky,
But the gloom! The gloom! That old impending gloom.
And the cold and bitter wind,
And cold grey clouds, clodding up the sky.
Black hedgerows, black gloomy flat water,
Glassy clear and freezing, like
We are freezing.
If I froze in Snow White’s coffin, I could make it with you.
But I'm not, so I drown, I drown in sunken memories of you.
Oh the gloom! The gloom! The dark impending gloom!
Night has fallen like a blanket lain from heaven,
And I weep for you.
Tears like the spitting, slitting rain,
Slicing through the sky and
Jagging at the window,
Pricking painful punctures.
I don’t know what to do with us now.
We have gone, and I
Have frozen over in the icy lake,
Lying with submerged memories of you.
I’ll cry for you tonight,
Let my tears crystallise in my eyes
And remain.
Ever we will remain,
Frozen forever,
Lost in a lake,
And cold.
