A Boat at Sea

The first thing I noticed was the water around me,

Miles and miles of blue stretching as far as the eye could see

And the second thing was the hard feel of the hard matte wood on the boat

in which I sat,

Breathing in the musty wood’s scent

And quietly content,

And idly touching my hand to my lips,

Licking the salt off my fingertips,

Breathing in the salty air’s smell.

The only change in the bleak sight of the eternal sapphire that surrounded me

was the occasional fish jumping to be free

of the monotony

that swallowed us.

the last thing i noticed was the silence

the complete absence of noise

and the void that i could feel

only to be gloriously filled upon the occasional fish jumping

to break the surface.
