Something so Complicated

The setting opens up to a classroom with a girl standing in front of the class holding a sheet of paper. A girl’s voice is heard overhead.

Izzy: (Heard above the scene) Abby was nervous. You could tell she didn’t want to do this. It was something she had to though. Something we both had to. I just hadn’t worked the courage to step beside her though. We prepared a speech. A speech that would, probably, be laughed at. It had to be done though. Mostly because it was our report for speech class, but also because it was the truth and the truth needed to be heard.

Abby: (Clears throat and looks down at her paper in her shaking hands) “Izzy and I have prepared a speech. This speech is all truth. No lies.”

Random kid: (Laughs) “I don’t see any Izzy.”

Another kid: “She probably bailed.”

Abby: (Clears throat again) “She’ll be here.”

Random kid (again): “Yeah right. She left you.”

Another kid: (again) “Yeah. She probably realized the loser you are and decided not to come.”

Teacher: (Angrily). “That’s enough!” (Looks toward Abby) “We’ll give her five minuets, if she’s not here by then, you present alone.”

Abby: (Bites lip nervously looking up at the clock)

Izzy’s voice is heard again: (Slumped beside a door). I waited in the hall hearing every word spoken. I took a few deep breathes. I had to be in there in four minuets fifty seconds. (Ten seconds pass). Four minuets forty seconds. I thought about hiding in the bathroom but my feet had thoughts of there own. (Walks into the class). “I’m here. Sorry I’m late.”

Teacher: “That’s quit alright, just begin your speech.”

Izzy: (Pulls out copy of their speech and stands beside Abby.)

Abby: (Whispers to Izzy.) “Where were you?”

Izzy: (Whispers back.) “Taking a deep breathe. Lets just begin.”

Abby: (Whispers) “Kay.” (Clears throat.) “This speech is about the truths and evils of love. How it can make your heat beat quicker and your palms sweaty. When it’s over it makes the tension thicker and you fall, not so swiftly.”

Izzy: “You try to get back up but your stuck. You feel so useless and worthless. Like a mutt. You wonder how someone could be so heartless.”

Abby: “Have you ever wondered why we fall in love? Is it because we the feeling of being accepted? Or do we just need something to hold on to?”

Izzy: “There are many types of lovers. Those who don’t really love: they tell you they need you then the next week they want someone else. Those who need something to care for: they treat as a child and won’t get close to you. Those who really love: they hold onto you and when you leave, their hearts are broken.”

Abby: “No love last forever. We believe they will and get married. It’s only a matter of time until the love vanishes and they become divorced, or they live with the other because they don’t want to break their commitment. It is rare that one is real. They stay forever and, actually, mean it.”

Izzy: “There is no such thing as a fairytale ending. No prince will ever come and carry you off to his castle. They may happen to the next queen of England, but not here.”

Abby: “We always say we’re in love. But are we really? Or do we just like saying we are?”

Izzy: “Love is so complicated that it is something that only God could explain. And, honestly, he’s not here to explain it.”

The speech ends and the two drop they’re arms lifting their heads to see a crowd staring at them.
