She takes her fingers out of her ears. "Did you say something?"

He sighs. "No."

"Okay. Vasoconstriction is a narrowing of the blood vessels resulting from contracting of the muscular wall of the vessels. When blood vessels constrict, the flow of blood—"

"Why do you care so much anyway?"

"Because."

"Because what?"

"Because shut up and let me study."

"Hey, Louisa?"

"What?"

"Did I ever tell you how gorgeous you look when you're concentrating on something? Your eyes get all dark, and your lip does this…thing."

"Thanks."

"Aren't you gonna compliment me back?"

"Why should I? Your ego's already the size of Texas, if not bigger. Now shut the hell up and let me study! Now, where did I put my osmosis notes?"

He steals her stack of books.

"OI! YOU! Gimme my books back!"

"Not until you tell me why you care so much about your grades."

"Because unlike some OTHER people I can mention—"

"Yeesh, say it, don't spray it."

"I don't have the money to make hundred thousand dollar do\nations to the college of my choice, knowing that I'll get in as long as I have my money. I need this scholarship more than anything. Now, can I have my notes back?"

"You know, my dad could offer you one of his company’s scholarships, if it's that important to you."

Her eyes narrow. "Are you calling me incompetent?"

"No. Ouch! Stop hitting me, woman!"

"I'll stop hitting you as soon as you give me my books back."

"One last question."

She sighs. "Go ahead."

"Why do you want this scholarship so badly?"

"Woah, you're actually thinking about this."

"shut up before I demand my books back without an answer."

"Are you done yet?"

"No."

"Now?"

"No!"

"Now?"

"Shut up, damn it!"

He pauses. "Now?"

She smacks herself on the forehead. "Yes. Now. I guess the reason I care about this scholarship so much is because I have huge dreams that'll only come true if I graduate college—which won't happen unless I get a scholarship. I just… I wanna make a difference. I wanna do something that'll affect billions of people around the world. I wanna be in the history books."

She pauses, and then whispers to herself. "I just don't wanna be forgotten."

He doesn't hear that last part. "Don't worry, you'll take the world by storm; I know you will."

A reflective pause ensues.

"It's just… it's a big thing, you know? Trying to make big dreams come true in such a big world. It's a big thing."

"I think I just farted."

"UGH! You sicken me! Eww, I can smell it! What'd you have for lunch? And where are my books?"

He grins and hands them to her. "Here you go."

"Thank you. Now that we've overcome that rather intriguing conversation, Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a cell wall or membrane or any partially-permeable barrier from a solution of low solute concentration to a solution with high solute concentration—"

"God, save me now."
