To Lose the One You Love
That Day
You never know how much you love someone until they’re taken away from you. When that happens, you feel as if your world has ended, like you can’t go on. That’s exactly what happened to me. I had the perfect life, the perfect woman until that horrible day.
“You’ve been sleeping with him haven’t you?” I accused her on our way to my mother’s house. This was the first time she’d meet Destiny. Little did I know, she never would, “This baby isn’t even mine is it?”
She sat in the passenger seat, glancing out the window, “No Justin, I told you it never happened again beyond that night,” she finally turned to look at me and placed a gentle hand on her overly sized stomach, “I don’t know if this baby is yours and you know it.”
I was angry. I couldn’t help it. Finding out your woman fooled around on you with your best friend was hard to digest, “And what the hell am I supposed to tell my mom?”
I heard her sigh then took a quick glance at her. She ran her long fingers though her hair and let her eyes fall to her lap, “Tell her I cheated. Who gives a shit? Tell her I’m a fuckin’ whore if you want!”
“Obviously you are,” I mumbled under my breath, my anger getting the best of me.
Her eyes widened and her anger flared as well, “What the hell did you just say?” she asked with bitterness in her voice, “Stop this damn car now!”
“Hell no!” I shot back, pushing the gas pedal to the floor, “Was he good Destiny? Was he worth it?” I think I literally flipped because suddenly she was scared but I really didn’t care.
She had tears in her eyes as she grabbed a hold of her seat in fear, “JUSTIN SLOW DOWN!” she screamed when she saw a car swerve into our lane.
I didn’t see the car until it was upon us. Before I could react our car slammed hard into theirs. For the next few seconds the only thing I remembered was the glass shattering and hearing her scream.
When I opened my eyes I could hear the faint sound of an ambulance coming. I blinked then groaned in pain, feeling blood trickle down the side of my face, “Destiny?” I whispered and looked over at her.
The sight of her made me sick and I almost vomited. A piece of glass was lodged deep into her, right about her stomach, blood covering her body. For a moment I was too shocked to move, my eyes wide at this terrifying sight.
“Destiny,” I whispered again and carefully scooted over next to her. She was breathing, just barely, as I cradled her face in my hands, “Destiny,” I felt tears come to my eyes, them rolling helplessly down my cheeks, “Destiny, I’m sorry! I love you! Don’t leave me, they’re coming.”
She moaned quietly and her eyes opened to slits as she looked up at me, “It was a mistake,” she said under her breath, “I never meant to ruin what we had. I love you so much!”
“You didn’t ruin it,” I told her softly as the ambulance approached, “You’re gonna be ok. We’re gonna be ok. Everything’s gonna be fine!”
If only I knew how wrong I was…
She didn’t make it. She had lost too much blood. I still have the picture of her covered in blood in my mind. It tortures me day and night. The accident was my fault but they ruled it as the others drivers fault for being drunk. If they only knew how wrong they were.
A week later, I went to the graveyard and stopped in front of her tombstone. I held our little baby in my arms as I stood, tears in my eyes. I was lucky they could save my baby girl. Nikki is what I called her. My little Nikki, so sweet and innocent. And because of me and my stupidity, she’d never know her mother…
The End
