Thank you
By: Erin Coleman
Mrs. Hanister sighed, tired and still grading papers on her VACATION. It was taking her so long that she decided to try that new website Mrs. Bents told her about. She logged in typing in her password looking around conspicuously. She clicks on the Firefox icon and types in the address box and puts in her and her students names. She closes her laptop and goes up the train humming an old tune. She descends up the stairs as graceful and happy as a newly crowned queen, she then starts to whistle the old tune not remembering the name, but having heard it from somewhere.
“Hello ma’am may I sit here?” an old woman in her 70’s or so asks in a English accent “Ohh sure” she says and scoots to the window seat “How are you this evening?” the old woman asks “I’m fine on vacation I just finished grading papers!” she says with a smile “good that’s good” the woman says “I’m on vacation too” She clears her throat and looks to the floor “Well my husband died a month ago and that old house is so depressing so I just needed to get away..” she says in a hoarse whisper and a tear falls down her face “Here” Mrs. Hanister says and hands her a tissue from her purse “Thank you I must look a mess and old woman like me crying over spilt milk” “No it’s ok” Mrs. Hanister says “Thank you” she says again with a small smile spreading over her withered face. Then she starts to sing a song quietly to herself in the same tune as she was whistling before.
“Love, Life this all makes are life go bye we live and die for none to hear of its existence………………..”Her voice starts to fade as she drifts into sleep her head bobbing on the icy window. She awakens looks to her left and sees no one there, but a note that says
Thank you.
Always,
A good friend
She folds it up and puts it in her shirt pocket then starts to sing the song.
The End
