Scene 1—Summer in SC
(It’s a typical day in the Midwest and the Ruttegers are getting ready to meet the open road.)
Bailey: (thinking to herself in an ecstatic voice) Ah, summer. That nervous time of the year when everyone wants to get out and have a bit of fun. Me, I’m just looking for some time out my own little burg and see my granny Ada again. I haven’t been to South Carolina since I was little, so it’ll be refreshing to see the ocean once more. (watching her house disappear into the background) Goodbye, house. Goodbye, Wink, my best canine friend. Goodbye internet, and goooooood-bye landlocked Midwest !
(Vacation plays as the family wagon leaves. Fast-forward through all the cars and traffic until she and her family are greeted by Granny Ada.)
Ada: Why, hello there ! Are you all a sight for sore eyes ! (hugs and kisses Bailey first of all)
Bailey: You see us every summer, Granny. Each time you act as if it’s the last time you will ! (chuckles)
Ada: Well, ya never know do ya ? (laughs along with her) That’s why I am making the most out of my golden years. Hello, sweet-pea ! (kisses Diane’s cheek) How I’ve missed you !
Diane: So have we ! I guess we should get everything squared away and prepare for the evening.
Steve: And if it isn’t too much trouble I’ll make dinner.
Ada: No need. I’ve boiled eel.
Bailey: (sticks tongue out) Gross !
Steve: Bailey Ester ! You watch your tongue.
Bailey: Yes, dad. Sorry, granny. I meant no disrespect. (narrating) But I literally hated grandma’s eel. I didn’t think I would taste good this time around either, but believe it or not, this was the summer that I discovered my tastes were beginning to change.
(scene change)
Scene 2—Summer Love
(Next day)
Diane: Up and at ‘em, kid ! Time for breakfast !
Bailey: (yawn) Already ? But it seems I just went to bed…5 more minutes mom.
Diane: We’re going to the beach, all of us. I hope you brought your collection jar along with you.
Bailey: Of course I did. The beach here has the most incredible treasures ever ! (gets out of bed excitedly, rushes downstairs, Ada is reading the news and enjoying breakfast with a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper)
Ada: Well, ain’t you a breath of fresh air ! Good morning, honey child !
Bailey: Morning, Granny. (hugs her from behind and kisses her)
Steve: I still have eggs and bacon, hot, hot, hot off the stove. I also have toast and strawberry jam, and OJ, unless you want juice.
Bailey: No, all of that sounds superb, dad. You make the best bacon and eggs.
Steve: Now you are just flattering me…probably in hopes I’ll buy you ice cream on the beach. Well forget it. I am not giving in. (laughs) You know I would anyway, dear.
You’re a good kid and we’re on vacation. We can be allowed to indulge a bit, can’t we ?
Bailey: (exuberantly) You BET !
Diane: Something smells scrumptious. (walks up to Steve) Oh, your famous hearty breakfast again ? Count me in, dear. (kisses his cheek)
Steve: (spins her around and dips her into a kiss) Now you’ve got a bit of sugar to start the day off right.
Diane: (dreamily) Mmmm-hmm.
(She laughs as he picks her up to kiss her again and they all get ready to go to the beach, packing up picnic supplies and heading out)
(3 hours pass)
Bailey: (having fun playing in the ocean and gathering shells while Two Girls For Every Boy plays. Bailey bumps into Clyde)
Both: (angered, dusting themselves off of sand) HEY, WATCH WHERE YOU’RE GOING !
Clyde: (he reaches out for her hand) Are you alright ? I think I bumped you pretty hard…
(Sea of Love plays as she goes through a dream-sequence until she is almost kissed by him)
Clyde: You OK, or what ?
Bailey: (stammering nervously) Of course I am. How about you ?
Clyde: (grin) Oh, I’m a lot better since you walked into my life.
Bailey: (to herself) That is the cheesiest pick up I have heard…EVER. (to him) Oh, that is so sweet.
Diane: Bailey, sweetums, it’s time for lunch…
Bailey: (blushing, awkwardly) (groan) My mom. I’m sorry…I didn’t even get your name.
Clyde: I got yours though, Bailey. Pretty name for a pretty lady. (does almost Fonz like gesture) I’m Clyde by the way…Catch you on the flip side, foxy lady.
Bailey: (is shocked that Clyde actually had a pen and paper with him and hands her his number) (in her mind) SCORE !
Ada: Come on, bunny ! The food’s getting cold.
Bailey: Alright, granny. I’m coming. I’m coming !
Clyde: Be seein’ ya around more I hope.
Bailey: (dreamily) (as she walks away) I hope so too…What a hunk ! (squeals)
Diane: Who were you talking to, eh ?
Steve: Yeah, clue us in, please. (nudges his daughter’s side playfully)
Bailey: Oh, that’s Clyde. He gave me his number ! Can you imagine ! That’s the first time a guy ever made a move on me ! (sighs blissfully again)
Diane: As far as I am concerned, the guys back home don’t know what they’re missing. But, just remember honey…take it slow. Summer flings often start out with a sizzle and end with a fizzle, so be careful.
Bailey: (looking off into the distance and sighing once more) Clyde…what a MAN !
(scene fade)
Scene 3—Off to the Beach Alone to See Clyde
(Bailey yawns and stretches, getting ready to set off by bike to the beach)
Ada: Hey, honey bunny, where are ya off to ?
Bailey: The beach, what does it look like ?
Ada: Off to see that Clyde fella again ?
Bailey: Yes indeedy-doody. (chuckles)
Ada: Bailey, be careful. Remember what your mama told you.
Bailey: (rolls eyes) I’ll remember, granny. I’ll remember. (pushes off the sidewalk with her foot and starts pedaling down the road)
(The old dog in the driveway, Bruce, just groans)
Ada: I know what you mean, Ol’ Bruce. I don’t have a good feeling about this kid either, but it’s her choice.
(At the beach)
Clyde: (Talking to some other girls, casually but then sees Bailey) Hey, you.
Bailey: (giggles) Hey yourself !
Clyde: I’ve got huge news.
Bailey: What is it ?
Clyde: You mean you don’t know ? (she shakes her head left to right) Oh, yeah. I forgot you don’t live here. (chuckles to himself) There’s a party here on the beach tonight. There’ll be music, food, drinks, games…the whole shebang.
Bailey: There’s never been one before.
Clyde: This is the first time there ever was. Cool, huh ?
(She shakes her head in approval, excitedly)
Clyde: So, hot stuff…are you gonna come with ?
Bailey: (dreamily) Oh, yeah. Definitely. You know I will be there. What time ?
Clyde: Party starts at about 7 pm. Be there or be square.
Bailey: Will do, Clyde. Catch you on the flip side, Clyde.
Clyde: (chuckle) Heh, I like that. Cute and clever…I like you more every time I see ya.
Bailey: (sighs as she walks away and dreamily rides her bike away)
Clyde: (looks at the text on his phone) U R 2 HOT. (smirks) She is so right…(the girls start swarming him again) Girls, girls, please…one at a time…There’s enough of Clyde Mercury to go around, and then some.
(Scene fade and the girls in the background can be heard giggling as Clyde compliments them, and tries chasing after all of them one at a time)
Scene 4—Party and Heartache
(Bailey is frantically searching for something to put on. In the background I’m Coming Out plays in the background as Bailey tries to find the perfect outfit, and does)
Bailey: (to her parents) Well what do you think ?! (outstretches arms) TADA !
(dramatically) I am woman here me ROAR ! (claws at the sky like a cat)
Diane: You look stunning, dear. (hugs her and kisses her affectionately) Have a terrific time, which I am certain that you will.
Steve: Yeah, go get ‘em Tiger ! (chuckles) Oh, don’t forget your cell. And don’t stay out too late.
Bailey: (sigh) I won’t dad. (hugs him and kisses him as well as her mother before leaving)
(We soon see Bailey dancing among the party-goers to a tune by La Dolce Vita)
Clyde: Hey, good looking !
Bailey: (bashfully) Hi, Clyde.
Clyde: Well don’t just stand there, dance ! Schmooze ! (gets close to her) Mingle !
Bailey: (swallows hard to dance with him but then the music picks up to the Scatman)
(to herself) Saved by a thundering beat…Thank you party gods.
(Turn the Beat Around soon plays, followed by Jungle Boogie and then Open Arms. Bailey hasn’t seen Clyde dancing with other girls…yet.)
(Bailey has excused herself to get a drink of punch and some refreshments. When she returns, she finds Clyde dancing with another girl.)
Katrina: I’m sorry, were you two partners ? (laughs obnoxiously) Clyde, you’re kidding me right ?
Clyde: I must’ve been blind-sided.
Mary: Clearly. I mean, look at her face. It’s atrocious.
Bailey: (stammers) I-I-I…
Summer: Pity. She can’t even speak correct English.
Valarie: What did you see in that pizza-faced girl ? (gags herself)
Bailey: (begins to cry and runs in the opposite direction)
(Backstabbers plays in the background as she runs away)
Heather: You don’t need her.
Bernice: That’s right, because you have us. (they all drape their arms around him and he dances with them slightly provocatively)
Pam: All of us.
Clyde: (laughing loudly) It’s so good to be me !
(They all laugh riotously as they dance with Clyde)
Bailey: (crying bitterly, she bumps into someone, and they’re both knocked down)
Toby: (clenching teeth in pain) Hey, that hurt ! (pauses) Are you alright, miss ?
Bailey: (sniveling) As well as can be expected. I’m sorry I ran into you. (tries not to cry again) I was just dumped.
Toby: (looks at Clyde dancing with all the young girls) By that schmuck ?
Bailey: (nods her head sadly) Yeah. (he helps her up and they dust themselves off)
Toby: Don’t let it get you down. The guy’s a player. You don’t need guys like that in your life. Buck up. Things will get better.
Bailey: (dries her eyes) You’re right. Who needs jerks like that. (pauses) You sure you’re alright ? I hit you pretty hard.
Toby: (laughs) I’m fine. Don’t worry about me…
Bailey: (smiles gently) Bailey.
Toby: (shakes her hand) Toby. Pleased to make your acquaintance. And if you ever need a friend, you know you can count on me as one.
Bailey: Thanks, Toby. (grin) I’ll be seeing you around, I guess !
(Scene fade and she walks off with a bit of a spring to her step)
Scene 5—Hope
(A Brand New Day begins playing in the background as the day approaches and the Rutteger family goes out to enjoy the malls, restaurants and a movie when Bailey is called by Toby.)
Ada: Is that Toby ? (she smiles and nods)
Bailey: Yes, it is, granny. He was the one who picked my spirits up.
Diane: He seems like a real gentleman. I’m glad that you were able to make a friend while we have been here. But you know tomorrow we have to be leaving.
Bailey: (sighs and frowns) Yes, and it seemed to go by way too fast. (kicks at an arrant rock idly) It’s not fair, not one little bit at all.
Diane: I know it’s not, dear. Don’t be sad. We’ll be back next summer.
Bailey: (to herself) Yes, I am aware…but I am really going to miss this place. (sighs)
That doesn’t make it any easier, mom but…It’s definitely something to look forward to.
Diane: (strokes Bailey’s chin with her thumb and forefinger) That’s the spirit.
Bailey: I’ll have time to take one more look around though, right ?
Diane: Of course you will. (raised eyebrow) Why ?
Bailey: I have someone I want to say goodbye to.
Steve: Another boy, I bet.
Bailey: Yes, and he’s nothing like that crude, crass beach bum.
Steve: I believe ya, hon. (tousles her hair playfully)
Bailey: Thanks, mom. (hugs her) Thanks, dad. (hugs him) This won’t take me long.
(rides back to the beach to watch the sunset, and luckily, Toby is there)
Toby: Hey, Bailey ! Good to see you again. (concerned) Why the long face ?
Bailey: I have to go back home tomorrow.
Toby: (a bit saddened) Ah. That’s a real bummer. But hey, do you have AOL, MSN or any IMs ?
Bailey: (upbeat) Do I ?
Toby: Super. I’ll just write my email for you here…(takes out a notepad and jots down his email address, giving it to her) There you are, Bailey.
Bailey: (hugging him warmly as the sun sets in the horizon)
(Someday We’ll Be Together as she waves goodbye to him, then there is a rather sweet but quick sequence of the family saying goodbye to Ada and Ol’ Bruce. Bailey hugs Ol’ Bruce goodbye and they throw their luggage into the van and head for home. Behind them Ada waves happily and Bailey is seen actually saying “goodbye” to her grandmother)
Bailey: (Thinking) Yeah, I’m going to miss this place and my new friend Toby. At least I know I’ll see him again. We’re never too far away as the internet is concerned.
(Before long, a sequence of panoramic views is shown until she is reunited with her dog Wink at home and dances about to the beat of Walking On Sunshine.)
(After unpacking, Bailey sits down in front of her computer to check her email)
Bailey: (sees Toby’s name) My dear Tobias, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
(On the other end)
Toby: So do I, Bailey. So do I.
(Bailey spins around in her chair ebulliently to the last strains of “Sunshine” and sings along to it dancing and doing a Chuck Berry impersonation at the guitar break in the song and then finally it comes to a close and we roll credits)
(Being a comedy, there will be bloopers, and plenty of them. My cut scene with Alone Again with Bailey singing the song sadly at a bar off the beach and then approaching the bartender, who looks strangely enough like Moe Syzslack)
Bailey: Hit me again !
Bartender: Bailey, it’s your 6th root beer. Shouldn’t you put a cap on it ?
Bailey: (desperately) I’m drowning here, man ! Give me another root beer…I’m beggin’ ! You don’t wanna see me beg !
Bartender: (sigh) Alright but it is your last one for the night.
Bailey: (hanging casually from his neck, lips dangerously close to his) If you weren’t old enough to be my dad, Sir…I’d ask you to marry me.
Bartender: Yeah, and if this was Montana, that’d work. Hey-o !
(rim shot)
(The film ends with Beyond the Sea and Bailey ends it with a high note, bogarting the mike and all)
