Smoke's Story

The curtains rustled as I walked past, “Just the wind” I told myself “nothing more”

The curtains rustled as I walked past, “Just the wind” I told myself “nothing more”. The walls were shadowblack, the burnt carpet dark-blue; with every small cat-like step I could feel each small braid beneath my paws. I was standing in the ruins of my last owner’s house.

I sat down squarely in the middle of the room, no furniture sat there; it was only me, and me waiting. Out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw a white shadow move across the wall. Wait. A white shadow? No. There was no such thing. Right? Sharp claws grabbed at me, I saw fire in a giant black eagle’s eyes. I was lifted up and out of the musty ruin into the lonely black night.

Over the city I flew, I had lost my sight temporarily due to the cut over my left eye. I could tell where I was only because of the colder weather in the high altitude. One minute I was soaring in death’s claws, the next I was falling down into the darkness. I opened my mouth and uttered what the mortal ear could never understand. Just as I was about to hit the concrete floor of an abandoned warehouse, a scaly rope flew under me and I held fast. Nickle had saved me. On and on Nickle flew, over seas and deserts until I was purring in a deep sleep, dreaming of what had happened.

“Smoke? Smoke! Come on smoke, wake up!” I opened my almond-shaped eyes; the whole team was standing over me. Blaizer, the black and grey mix dog, Nickle, the medium sized dragon with silver scales and a five-foot wingspan, and Moon, our newly appointed black panther.

“That cut looks pretty bad” muffled Blaizer, nodding at my eye. I looked down at my light grey fur; it had turned rust colored in places due to the dried blood.

“I’ll go wash up” I commented. Clean and fresh I padded back into the BQ, (that’s what we called our hideout) was part of a forgotten sewer, in the late 1990’s it had been closed off for a sighting of hazardous waste, but of course, it had been a false alarm.

“Uh” began Moon, “shouldn’t we be talking about how Surga found Smoke in the ruins? I mean, we probably could have found the orb if one of those black eagles hadn’t found Smoke first.’ There was a knocking at the door three stories above; I looked at the clock, 11:37p.m. Who could come now? I wondered.

“Nickle, you come with me” said Blaizer. I had a sinking feeling in my stomach as I watched them go.

“Moon; do you know how to run?”

“Can you get the license number?” screamed Moon over the loud roar of the truck we were chancing.

“No, it’s too dark.” I shrieked back. “Just jump on the back” I added. Moon and I were chasing a big white truck that held Blaizer and Nickle, when they had gotten to the door two men had stunned them and put them in their truck. “I think I know where they’re going!” I told Moon, “There’s a shortcut over there.” And as we passed it Moon and I ducked into a hole under a big rock on the side of the road. The passage was dark and dank, but with our golden cat-eyes we could see that the underground tunnel was made with bricks. The tunnel was a long round one; the bricks went all the way around the walls and ceiling, like an old subway station.

“Let’s hurry.” Said Moon as her voice echoed around the walls. The tunnel was long. Very long. With each step I felt a little weaker, a little slower, “No” I told myself, “your doing this for your friends, keep going.” I had told myself this a few times until the tunnel just stopped. Stopped, the round passage was going and going until it ran right into a brick wall.

“Augh!!” screamed Moon, “How? We walk all this way for a dead end?! Nooo!!”

“Oh, calm down.” I said to her, and went over to the wall, “six from the left, down, across three, over two…” I muttered to myself, “and push.” The wall shook and started leaning toward Moon and I, “Move back!” I screamed. The wall fell with an ear-shattering crash. Light streamed in the opening, two black eagles sat waiting for us.

“Smoke, Moon, how nice of you to join us!” snarled a hungry voice. I opened my eyes; Surga sat in front of us, Nickle and Blaizer to the side. I tried to lunge at him but an eagle’s claws were stuck into my back. Surga, noticing this, said to his eagles, “Nomel, Emil, put them down.” Moon and I fell against the floor, it was then I realized where we were, Surga and his two minions sat with us in the BQ. What a waste of time and energy just to bring us back! The hideout may have been closed, but that didn’t mean water didn’t run through it. Surga’s whole plan unfolded in front of me. We were all going to drown.

Rustling in the corner made me turn around; Blaizer and Nickle were waking up.

“Grab the dragon!” Surga shouted at Emil and Nomel. They flew for Nickle, but Blaizer jumped up and grabbed Nomel out of the air, Blaizer shook Nomel vigorously until no more life was left in him. Everyone looked at him as he turned the odd color of his shadow, pure white. Nomel’s figure changed from an eagle, into a perfectly round orb the color grey.

The only thing moving in the room was Emil’s flapping wings, Nickle looked over at him and faster than the blink of an eye, he struck. The same thing happened to Emil as he died; only this time, the orb turned dark blue with patches of white. Surga, seeing his two workers turned into glass balls in front of him seemed to loose all his confidence. “Well Surga,” said Blaizer, “looks like this is your last dip.” And Blaizer made to push Surga into the rushing underground river.

“No!” I shouted before I could stop myself. “If you kill him then you’ll be the murderer! Just turn him in and be done with it!” Blaizer looked at me a moment, then he began to say something, but no one heard it because at that moment we heard a splash, and Surga was gone in the river. But he left behind him, a white, crystal, orb. Before anyone could say anything the orbs started glowing gold and made a triangle out of witch a silvery voice came out,

Congratulations, you have found the three magical orbs of creation and brought them together. Now listen, you may bring one person back from the dead, a most desirable wish, but be warned, no one can tell if they will take kindly to being awoken. Who do you choose?

At the same time everyone said “Surga” and looked surprised at themselves. But the golden triangle on the floor began to glow brightly and Surga the Tiger appeared in the middle.

That is how we got our new team member.
