Chapter 1

"Ladies and gentleman. Please stay in your seats and put your trays in the upright position. We will be landing soon." said the stewardess on the microphone.

It was still morning as the sunlight, poured through my window. I put all my belongings back in my carry on, double checked my seat belt and then tied back my long wavy brown hair into a ponytail.

My name is Harmony Jaren. I live with my parents and my younger sister, Melody, in our two story home in Neboton, Ontario. My sister and I are on this flight to go to California to stay with friends of the family for the summer, in the small town of Trebin. Our parents thought it would be a good idea for us to have a chance at seeing the world, and trying new things. I have only met Gloria once, when I was really young, but have not had the chance to meet her sixteen year old daughter, Chelsea. Melody and I, had decided to keep an open mind when it came to this summer, as we have never lived in a small town before.

I took a deep breathe and was chewing the piece of gum in my mouth as I felt the plane slowly descending to the ground. I glanced over at Melody and noticed she looked a little scared, although I knew she would never admit it.

Melody had thick shoulder length, curly, dark brown hair, brown eyes and tanned skin and is was little shorter than my five foot six. She is in average shape like me, and she is fifteen years old. She was usually quiet around people that she didn't know too well, but once she got to know you she was a lot of fun. I remember when we used to share a room and we would stay up for hours giggling and talking. I nudged her with my elbow and started a conversation with her, tried to get her to laugh, doing my best to distract us both, I kept going until I was interrupted by the stewardess.

"All passengers thank you for flying with us, you may now gather your belongings from the over head compartments and have a nice stay." she said.

We grabbed our things, and went to the end of the line up that lead out the door of the plane. I made sure that Melody and I stayed together, as we walked out the door of the airplane, and walked down the corridor to the inside of the airport. It took us about half an hour to find our luggage, and get through customs. We walked over to where the entrance was, and looked around for some one that looked like the women in the pictures my mother had shown us.

Then I noticed a girl who had looked about our age, holding a sign that read Jaren on it. She had brown hair which was tied up in a ponytail, light skin and light brown eyes. She was about my height and looked around like she was kind of nervous about something.

Just then a woman came up behind her and was talking to her. I was pretty sure it was Gloria she looked almost the same as she did in the pictures only she had aged some. She had shoulder length red hair, vibrant green eyes, and light skin like the girl, she was a little taller than I was and like her daughter in good shape.
Melody and I walked over to them, pulling our luggage behind us.

"Hi Gloria." I said.

Her eyes opened wide and as she opened her arms and gave me a big hug and cried "Oh my goodness Harmony, you have gotten so big! And you still look just like your father with those bright blue eyes of yours!"

"It's been a while." I said.

When she finally let me go she looked over at Melody and said "You must be Melody. Wow you look so much like your mother."

Then she gave Melody a big hug too. When she finally let Melody go she took a look at both of us. Then Gloria looked over at the girl, when she had cleared her throat, as though she had forgotten that she was still standing there.

"Oh! Where are my manners? This is my daughter Chelsea, she will be your tour guide, and all that, while I am at work." Gloria said.

"Hi." Melody and I said in unison. "Hello." she replied kind of shyly.

"Well, come on then, follow us to the car and we can head back to our place, you two must be exhausted." Gloria said and turned and headed for the doors.

Once all our luggage was in her navy blue car we all climbed in and we were off to her house. We drove through large cities and through the country side and then finally after a little while I saw the sign that said You have now entered the town of Trebin, California. As we drove through I looked out my window to see big old houses pass us by. Right in the middle of town there was a big cement fountain with benches, tress and gardens surrounding it. There were cute little buildings, which were all shops and there was a diner and a cafe on either side of the fountain. All the shops seemed to be circling around the fountain.

We turned down a street heading away from the fountain and a few seconds later we pulled into the drive way of an old three story wooden home. It was a nice shade of baby blue and had a wrap around porch, and there were white shutters on each of the windows, I could tell that they took good care of their home. There was a nice size yard in front of the house, and it had a colourful stone path leading to the stairs of the porch and colourful flower gardens surrounding the path, leading around the sides of the house.I stood there in awe, staring at this amazing house that Melody and I got to spend our entire summer in.

We got out luggage out of the back and followed Chelsea and Gloria into their home. Once inside we were standing in the foyer, the walls were painted a salmon pink, and the straight ahead from the door you were facing a wide old wooden staircase which was made of a deep brown wood. If you look passed the staircase, down the hallway, you could see into the kitchen. There were big doorways, which their borders were made of the same wood as the staircase, on either side of us, that led to what looked like a living room and a library. Except for the kitchen all the floors were hard wood.

Shortly after getting inside Gloria's beeper went off. She took it off her belt and looked at the message and said "Oh no, I have to go back to work, but Chelsea can show you around and give you the tour and I will be back tonight for dinner."

"Okay." we said.

There was a bit of silence between the three of us after Gloria left and we stood there awkwardly in the foyer.

Then I said "Your house is amazing."

"Thanks" she said and tried to smile.

"Could you give us a tour?" I asked.

"Sure." she replied.

We took off our shoes and left our luggage in the foyer so we could grab it before, heading upstairs.

She turned to her left and said "This is our living room in here." then turned to her right and said "This is the library, where we have a large selection of books, both antique and brand new."

She led us passed the staircase and walked down the hall.

The kitchen was pretty big in size, there were soft green counters and beige cupboards along the walls to our left. On one end of the cupboards was a big white fridge and the other end of the counters was a white electric stove/oven. There was an island in the middle of that area, that's top was also done in the same soft green as the counters and beige cupboards underneath. Straight ahead was another door that looked like it lead to the laundry room. To our right was a dark wood, dining table and two doors that I guessed were a closet and a bathroom. The walls were a nice golden yellow with a floral border of pink roses going along the top, the floor was tiled with big pastel yellow tiles with grooves going around each as a border.

Once inside the room she said "This is the kitchen, we eat breakfast and lunch at the island, and dinner at the table. There is a half bathroom through there, and there is a full one upstairs."

Then Chelsea led us back to the foyer and up the stairs. Once at the top I could see five closed doors.

"That room over there is my mom's" she said pointing to her left. "Next to that is the linen closet." she said pointing to the next closed door. "This one is mine." she said walking over to the closed door on our farther right and opened it to show us.

The room was pretty big and it was kept neat, the walls were a nice teal colour. There was a queen size bed with a colourful quilt laid on it, and a white headboard was against the wall. She had a book shelf next to her desk, crammed full of books. She also had a decent sized closet where all her clothes were hanging. In the middle of the floor there was a baby pink fuzzy rug.

"Wow did you decorate this yourself?" I asked.

She nodded.

"It's amazing!" I said.

"Thanks." she said and seemed a little less tense.

We left her room and she pointed at the next door and said "In here is the bathroom."

Then we got to the last door and it was the door straight ahead from the stairs. "Through here is where you two will be sleeping." she said and opened the door.

There was another, smaller, old wooden staircase. We walked up it and once at the top, turned to our left there were three more steps and another hard wood floored hallway with two wooden doors right across from each other.

"The one on the left is yours, Harmony. The one on the right Melody's." Chelsea said.

Once in front of the doors, Melody and I looked at each other and opened them at the same time. I looked inside and gasped in excitement at the room. The room was kind of big. There was a dark wooden queen sized bed to my right which had a colourful quilt on it with the head board against the wall. Next to the bed there was a little wooden dark brown table with a drawer. On the other side of the bed was the door to my closet and when I took a look inside, I noticed that it was almost a walk in closet and there were hangers already waiting for me. There was two windows in the room, one of them straight ahead from the door and it over looked over part of the garden and the neighbour's house. To my left there was a window seat with soft pale peach, and pink cushions on it and it over looked the front yard and anything beyond that. Finally against the same wall as the door there was a dark antique desk with a mirror on top and there was a wooden chair sitting at it and drawers on either side of the space where the chair was. The walls were a nice pale purple. Melody's room was much like mine except everything was on the opposite side.

"Do you like them?" Chelsea asked.

"These rooms are amazing!" I cried in excitement.

"Well I will leave you to get settled in, and then we can get some lunch." Chelsea said.

"Alright thank you." I said

"Yes, thank you." said Melody and Chelsea was kind of shocked to hear her speak for the first time.

I put my luggage on the bed and looked around the room once more. Then I unzipped my bags and started to put things away, thinking this was going to be a great summer.
