Chapter 10

When I woke up, I was laying on a hospital bed and I already had the cast on. I looked around me to see Andrew's smiling face.

"Hey." I said sleepily.

"Hey, how are you feeling?" he asked eyes full of concern.

"I'm fine." I replied. "How long was I out for?"

"About sixteen hours." he replied.

"Too much excitement I guess." I said and laughed.

"Yeah." he said.

Suddenly in a panic about the others I asked "What did you find out about the others? Where are they?"

"Relax." he said. "They just left for a minute, to get some food, they will be right back. They are all fine, they were out to a movie, when it happened." He had disturbed look on his face.

"What is it?" I asked.

"They caught the guy that did it." he answered.

"Who was it?" I asked.

"His name is Earl Whitman." he said and then paused. "He was the delivery guy from the flowers for the party."

"Oh." I said flashbacking to day of the party and the guy holding the clipboard that I had signed.

I hadn't noticed him much, with all the excitement of the party. What I remember he was built big and I think he had been partially bald with a beard.

"I'm so sorry." he said.

"For what?" I asked.

"If I had walked you to the door, maybe I would have noticed that the lights weren't on and sensed something was wrong." he replied.

"Andrew. No. There was no way you could have known. Don't blame yourself. Please don't." I said. "If it wasn't for you, I would have been much worse than this right now. You saved my life."

"Okay." he said in defeat. "I guess you're right. But it doesn't make me feel any better."

"Of course I'm right." I said and winked at him. "Now give me some sugar."

He smiled, stood up and gave me a kiss just as the others walked into the room.

"Well, well." Gloria said.

I chuckled and said "Hey guys."

Melody ran up to the bed and gave me a big hug. I smiled and held her close.

"How are you doing?" Chelsea asked.

"Well a little sore, from some bruises, but I think I'll survive." I said dramatically.

I was on a roll for the laughter.

"So what did you bring me?" I asked noticing a paper bag behind Melody's back and Chelsea was hiding something else.

"Oh did you want something?" Melody said sarcastically.

"You're evil." I said dramatically.

"Just kidding." Melody said. "What kind of sister would I be if I didn't bring you something?"

"Not a very good one." I replied. "So, what did you get me?"

Melody pulled a paper bag out and set the items on the table. There was a teen magazine, a chocolate bar, a cup of French vanilla cappuccino, my journal and a new funky pen with a bird sitting on top and feathers sticking out of it.

"Ha-ha, I love you!" I cried.

I got the cappuccino and took a sip.

"Well it's not Tim Hortons, but it's close enough." I said. "Thanks sis."

"Don't mention it." she replied.

"You amaze me at how you go through all this and still keep up the sarcasm and your energy." Andrew said.

"Sarcasm is a way of life, there is nothing to keep up." I said as I became hyper and then laughed.

"Do you think it was wise giving her caffeine?" he asked.

"I don't now." Melody said and then laughed.

Then the doctor came into the room as every one started to laugh.

He had short dirty blonde hair, tanned skin and brown eyes. He was wearing a white doctor's coat over some beige slacks and a dark red sweater.

"Wow you guys, don't be so glum." the doctor said sarcastically.

"See it's contagious." I said which made every one else laugh, except for the doctor who just smiled.

"I'm Dr. Joe Orson." the doctor said. "So how are you doing?"

"I'm fine, that is I will be when I get my leg back." I replied.

"Well that won't be for a week." he said getting back to business.

"Well, can I go home?" I asked.

"Yep. You can leave today, if you wish." the doctor replied.

"I wish." I said nodding.

"Okay then. You will need to sign her release papers." he said addressing Gloria.

"Okay." she said. "I guess we will need to set you up a room downstairs until you are healed."

"No, it's okay, you don't need to go through any trouble." I said.

"Well there is no way I am going to let you try and make your way up two flights of stairs on crutches." Gloria said.

"Good point." I said.

"Well I will go fill out the papers, why don't you get changed and then we can take you home." Gloria instructed. "Every one let's leave her, to get changed."

Every one left the room, and I lifted myself into the chair beside the bed, and wheeled my way to the washroom, with my clothes in my lap. Melody, Chelsea, and Gloria left, so that they could get one of the rooms downstairs set up for me.

Andrew pushed my wheelchair to his car and then helped me from the chair to the back seat of his car so I could stretch my leg out on the seat. I sat facing a way that if I wanted to hold his hand at any time I could. When we pulled up to the house he helped me out of the car and on to the crutches. I hobbled up the stairs and into the foyer. I looked around the foyer and there were bouquets of flowers every where.

"What on earth?" I said.

"Once every one found out what happened they started to send get well cards and bouquets." Melody explained as she came down the stairs.

"It would seem your gift is at it again." Andrew said and laughed.

I laughed and then looked around the room in astonishment. Suddenly my crutch began to slip and I had not noticed until it was too late. Luckily Andrew noticed on time and caught me, as we both landed on the floor and I landed on his lap, his arms around me. We started to laugh and Chelsea and Melody looked at us confused.

"This is how we ended up dating." I said and laughed some more.

Gloria walked into the room and look at us laughing on the floor and shook her head.

"Okay, you two, let's get this little Miss to her new room." Gloria said.

"Can you guys help me up?" I asked Melody and Chelsea.

They lifted me up as Andrew pushed until I was standing on one leg again. They handed me the crutches and I made my way to follow Gloria into what I knew as the library. Gloria slid the doors open and I saw all my stuff, even my bed sitting in there.

I turned to Gloria and gave her a big hug. Then I realized something, I had not heard Gloria's beeper go off at all during the entire day.

"Gloria, don't you have to be at work?" I asked.

"Nope, I took the day off." she answered.

"But, won't you get fired?" I asked.

"No, I explained the situation to my boss and when she wouldn't allow it, I explained it to her boss. Apparently he has kids too." she said and chuckled. "He said I could have as long as I needed."

Then Andrew helped me to the bed and I laid down. I saw Gloria nod her head away from us and the others left the room, leaving Andrew and I alone. He sat down on a chair next to my bed and I looked over at him and smiled. I placed my right hand on his cheek, and I caressed it a little and he closed his eyes and I could hear his breathing get a little heavy. I smiled and ran my fingers through his hair some and then put my hand behind his head and pulled him toward me and kissed him.

"Hey, don't you have to work?" I asked after we pulled away.

"Trying to get rid of me already?" he asked.

"Ha-ha, no." I said sarcastically. "But what about the diner?"

"They will be fine without me, I want to stay with you." he replied.

"Look, you told me that you help keep the diner running. I don't want you to wait around for me on hand and foot." I said.

"But-..." he started.

"No buts, I'll make you a deal. What time do you get off work?" I asked.

"Six o'clock." he replied.

"Okay, go to work now and I will meet you there at six o'clock. Then you can spoil me all you want." I said and smiled.

"But how will you meet me there? You should stay in bed." he said.

"Do you seriously think I am going to lay in bed all day? I will lose my mind, even more I mean." I said and laughed.

He laughed a little and then said "Oh, okay, fine, I will see you tonight. Prepare for a night of romance."

"Oh I will." I said and then laughed again.

He gave me kiss and walked backwards out of the room never taking his eyes off of me and then out the door. When the door closed behind him, Chelsea and Melody came into the room.

"So, what's going on?" Melody asked.

"Well let's see in the past twenty four hours, I was attacked and sprained my ankle. I had a cast put on and then I came home to my library bedroom. Then when the rest of the house subtly leaves the room I had to chase my boyfriend away." I said and laughed.

"Oh well is that all?" Melody said sarcastically.

Then Gloria came in with the phone and held it out for me.

"It's for you." she said.

"Who is it?" I asked.

"Your parents." she said.

"Oh yeah, call mom and dad." Melody said remembering the message she was supposed to give me.

I frowned at Melody and then accepted the phone from Gloria taking a deep breathe before putting it up to my ear.

"Hello." I said.

"Harmony! Are you alright?" my mother cried.

"I'm fine mom, it's just a sprain." I said. "I will be walking again in a week."

"Just a sprain! You went up against a burglar and it's just a sprain!" she cried.

"I am completely fine, they moved all my stuff to the main floor and Gloria, Chelsea and Melody are being exceptionally good helpers." I explained.

"What about this boy, Melody mentioned?" she asked.

"Boy?" I said giving Melody a dirty look and Melody responded with a guilty one.

"Yes, she said you were going out with this boy." she said.

"Oh, right, well he is actually the person that saved my life." I said. "He came to my rescue when I was alone with the intruder."

I was hoping she would feel better knowing I was safe with him.

"Is he there?" I heard my father ask.

"No, he left for work." I replied.

"Well I would like to talk to him, next time." he said.

"Dad, no." I whined.

"The boy saves your life and I can't even talk to him to thank him." he said.

"Alright fine." I said giving in. "But no embarrassing stuff."

"Have you ever known me to be embarrassing?" he asked.

"Yes." I said immediately.

"Okay, fine. I will behave." he said.

"Look mom and dad I'm going to go now, I'm fine, don't worry, I will be home in one piece." I said.

"Alright dear, well take care and be careful." my mother said.

"I know, I will." I said.

"We love you." my dad said.

"I love you too guys." I said. "Bye."

I hung up the phone and set it down beside me.

"Sorry." Melody said.

"Yeah. Not much we can do now." I said.

Later that afternoon I was still sitting in bed when some one knocked on the door. There wasn't any one around to hear it except me.

"Come in!" I called.

They opened the door and walked in. It was Isabel and her little dog.

"Well hello there." she said noticing me in the library.

"Hey." I said with a smile.

"How are you doing?" she asked.

"Surviving." I said.

"We thought we would come for a visit." she said.

"Well thank you, I could use the company." I said.

She walked over to the bed and the dog jumped up on the bed with me.

"No, biscuit." she said.

"It's alright." I said and scratched the dog behind its ears.

The dog licked my fingers and lied down in my lap.

"Please have a seat." I said and indicated the chair beside the bed.

She sat down and we began to talk for a while and then Gloria came down from upstairs and saw Isabel sitting with me.

"Oh, hello Isabel." she said kindly.

"Hello Gloria. I hope you don't mind me stopping by, its just I heard what happened and that she was home now, so I thought I would come visit." she explained.

"No, no you're welcome any time." Gloria said. "Well, I'm afraid I must leave now any ways." Isabel said.

"Well thank you for coming." I said.

"See you soon." Isabel said.

Biscuit jumped off the bed and followed Isabel out the door. A few minutes later there was another knock at the door, this time Gloria answered it. It was Bill Housington, the mayor and Noel, his wife.

"I have come to see how Harmony is doing." he said to Gloria.

They walked over to the bed.

"I'm fine sir." I said.

"Does it hurt?" Noel asked concern in her eyes.

"No, not any more. It's just a little uncomfortable." I replied.

"I heard what happened and I feel partly responsible, I mean this is my town." he said.

"Don't blame yourself, it could have happened in any town and at least they caught the guy." I said.

"Very well." he said "If there is any thing you need though, just give me a call, here is my card."

He handed it to me and it had a business number on it and I turned it around and what I guessed his personal number was there.

"Thank you very much." I said.

Noel gave me a hug and then they left. About a half hour later there was another knock on the door.

"Maybe we should just keep the door open." Gloria joked as she went to open it.

In came Bobby, Shirley, John and Millie. Mrs. Grainger, Bobby's mom, came in behind them. They ran over to my bed hiding something behind their backs.

"Hey, guys. How are you?" I asked.

"Good." they said in unison.

They were looking at my cast.

"Does it hurt?" Shirley asked.

"No, not any more." I replied.

"They brought you something." Mrs. Grainger said.

"Oh, you did?" I asked pretending to be surprised.

They each handed me pieces of paper with drawings on them and their handwriting saying things like 'Get well soon' and 'Hope you feel better'

"Aw thank you guys. They are lovely." I said.

"Well, they wanted to come and see you. But I have some running around in town to do, so we have to get going now." Mrs. Grainger said.

They all whined and it made me feel really good that they didn't want to leave me.

"Well if you want, you could keep them here, while you do what you have to do. I wouldn't mind watching them. As long as it's okay with Gloria." I said.

"I don't mind." Gloria said leaning against the side of the door.

"Are you sure? They can be a handful." she said.

"I don't mind. I could use the company." I said and then turned my attention to the kids. "Plus, my cast is looking a little bit boring. Maybe, you guys could decorate it for me."

They cheered and jumped up and down excitedly.

"Okay. You guys behave, I will be back in an hour or two to get you." she said.

"Okay." they said in unison.

Mrs. Grainger left and then Gloria left to get some markers for them to draw with.

"It feels so weird." Shirley said as she started to draw.

They spent the whole time colouring my cast until it was a variety of colours and drawings. When Mrs. Grainger came back to get them she thanked me and I gave them each a hug good bye.

"You're going to be a great teacher some day." Gloria said standing in the doorway.

"Thanks." I said with a smile.

I left the house at five thirty giving myself enough time to get to the diner by six o'clock, just as I promised Andrew.

He had just got outside when I was crossing the street, he ran over to me to help me.

"Are you alright? Do you need help?" he asked quickly.

"I'm fine, I made it here on my own, didn't I?" I asked.

"Yes, I guess you did." he replied and looked down at my cast. "Had some private decorators I see."

"Yeah." I said with a laugh.

He walked me to his car and then helped me inside.

Once he was inside the car I asked "So where are we going?"

"It's a surprise." he replied with a flirty smile.

We drove off hand in hand and were driving for about ten minutes before we actually pulled in any where. We were in an empty field he pulled the car to a stop and I looked at him confused. He pushed some buttons on his cell phone and then got out of the car. Suddenly the wind started to blow and Andrew just smiled and walked over to my side and opened my door.

When he helped me out, I saw that it wasn't the wind, a helicopter was landing in the field. I looked at him amazed and he just smiled.

"You continue to surprise me." I called.

He helped me over to the helicopter and then lifted me up in it and ran around to the other side and climbed in. The helicopter started to take off once we were ready. I held Andrew's hand tightly since I was a little afraid of heights. He moved closer to me and wrapped his arms around me, which comforted me some. I looked out the window and watched as the town came into view and then left. There was a clear sky that night and it was so magical.

I turned to face him and then said "Thank you."

"For what?" he asked with a smile.

"For being you." I replied.

"Oh, well in that case your very welcome." he said and gave me a kiss.

I turned back to look out the window, before I knew it the helicopter was landing back in the field and Andrew hopped out the other side and then ran around and him and the pilot helped me out of the helicopter. I hopped over to the car with Andrew's arms around me, helping me and then I got back into the car. The helicopter took off again as then we drove off. We drove back to his place, and his parents were preparing their dinner.

"Why don't you two join us?" Elizabeth asked.

"Oh, I don't want to intrude." I said.

"You aren't, please join us." Elizabeth said.

I looked at Andrew and he shrugged his shoulders.

"Okay, sure." I said.

"Great. It will be ready in a few minutes." Nick said.

"Okay." Andrew said and then helped me to the dinning table.

They had made spaghetti and sausage for dinner, and it was very good. After dinner Andrew helped me down the hallway and to a door at the end. He opened it and let me in first, I guessed it was his room.

The walls were a strong blue and there was an entire shelf filled with trophies. The furniture in his room was all white wood and consisted of a single bed, a desk, a dresser, a night table by his bed, a TV and TV stand, and a big dark blue futon.

He helped me over to the futon and I sat down on the end. He sat down next to me and I guided him to lay on his back with his head in my lap. We sat in silence as I caressed his face and hair gently.

Finally after a while he asked "Hey, Harmony my grandparents are having a party in two weeks, would you like to be my date?"

"Yeah, sure, you're grandparents are awesome." I said.

"No, not those grandparents. My other grandparents." he said.

"Oh, okay. Sure, I will still go." I said. "I am going to have to find a dress."

"Don't worry about it, tomorrow, you and I are going shopping." he said.

"What? No, you don't have to buy me a dress." I said.

"You wouldn't have to buy the dress if it wasn't for me, so don't worry about it." he said.

"Oh alright." I said giving in and leaned in and kissed him. "You spoil me too much."

"I know, but you're worth it." he said and smiled.

I figured that comment deserved another kiss. After another while we decided that he better take me home. He dropped me off and this time walking me to the front door and helping me inside and to my temporary room. With a kiss goodbye he went back out to his car and drove off.
