Is this Right?

What I’ve done…My Linkin Park ring tone went off in my pocket.

“Hello?” I answered my cell phone. Normally I let my answering machine get it but I was in a very good mood today and nothing, I mean nothing, was going to get me pissed. At least that’s what I thought until I got this call.

“Alice?” the person at the end of the line said. “Alice, is that you?”

“Yes mom, it’s me.” I replied in a half happy half pissed off way. “What do you want?”

“Damn Alice, you need to relax.” She said ignoring my tone. “Anyways, I just called to say that you’re moving in with your father. He doesn’t live far from us but at least I won’t have to deal with you anymore.”

“Thanks mom, for treating me like a pack of cards.” I muttered to her. “When is he coming?”

“Good, it’s good to hear you’re enthusiastic about this.” She laughed her witch like laugh. Yeah I’m totally enthusiastic about living with a guy that beat his wife. “He’ll be here on Friday so you have three days to pack starting today.”

“That is just totally awesome.” I forced out a fake preppy tone. “Like Oh-Em-Gee!”

I really don’t understand why people use that phrase. It’s totally annoying, unlike totally. That’s like my word. Totally this and totally that, yup that’s how I do. Right…

“Yes, I know. No more you around the house. Actually I’m selling it and moving in with Mark.” She giggled like a little girl.

F.Y.I. Mark is my mom’s boyfriend; they’ve been dating for over a year now which surprises me greatly. She usually just keeps a boyfriend for no longer than two months. So yeah, I think mark told me before that he was got to propose to her soon. See, unlike my mom who told hates the fact that I exist and wonders why everyday she even kept me, Mark is a totally sweet guy. He’s always the one who would help me with homework or pick me up when my car broke down and I was stranded out in the middle of nowhere at 3 am. That already happen, but he was totally cool about the whole thing.

“That’s great,” I said. “I’m truly happy for you. He’s a good guy.”

“Yeah, well I have to go.” She coughed. “Don’t want to waste my time talking to you the whole day.”

“Right, Cause God knows you’ll die from getting to speak with your daughter once in a while.” The sarcasm was leaking from my mouth.

“Exactly!” she yelled. “You really understand. Okay so, um, bye.”

“Yeah bye,” I said right as she hung up. “Argh! You son of a mother!” I screamed aloud. “How dare she treat me that way! Her own flesh and blood! Damn her and all her non motherly glory...”

“Alice!” I heard a yell. “You’re talking to yourself, again.”

I turned my head to the left to see my best friend and as close to family I have, Janey. She was just staring at me like she always does when I talk to myself, which is a lot. But it’s no fair because I can’t help it. It makes me feel better since I’ve only known Janey for five years out of my seventeen years on this world and I started talking to myself like way before that. Plus the fact that her parents are always out of town so she knows my loneliness. But whatever, the point is that Janey was staring at my like I was about to give birth to a twelfth child.

“Sorry,” I mumbled. “It was my mom and well you know how she gets, bitchy, arrogant, and well, her.”

“Yeah,” she sighed. “Okay, enough of bitchy moms and all that non-jazz crap. Let’s go.”

“You never even told my where we were going!” I said softly to myself even though she heard me.

“We, meaning you and me…”

“No, not you and me.” I cut her off.

“Shut it!” she hissed. “So yes, you and I are going to a place…”

“You mean the one with the people and the stuff?” I laughed.

“Yes! Now let me finish!” she growled.

There was silence for a few moments until I decided to say something. “Usually when people say ‘Let me finish’ they keep talking.” I tried to hold my laugh in.

“So this place we are going to, it has a band.”

“And…” I urged her to continue.

“They are looking for a female vocalist.”

“That means…” I smiled.

“Damn it Alice!” she burst. “It means you have your chance to be in a band. You sing damn well, no awesome, and they are having auditions today. So I’m taking you to go audition and join them if they want you, which they probably will because you have the best voice in this frickin city. Believe me youtube and the people in this place are like peas and a pod. You are going to try out even if I have to kidnap you!” she said in one breath.

“Damn…” was all I could say. I mean c’mon, she was threatening me don’t I have a say in this? Apparently not…

“Look!” she squealed. “There it is.” She pointed to a building that looked just like every other building in the downtown area. Old fashioned but new. But this one was different, not a business office or anything boring like that but it was a club. I know that because the sign read, ‘The Rock Club’. Not the best name in the world but that’s their problem what they name their club.

I really wanted to be in a band be it just felt that it would get in the way, so I never bothered. I had to work all the time to get money so that my mom and I could keep our apartment but my mom never work and how she got money, well, God only knows. Plus Mark would help us out with the money thing but now that mom is moving in with him, there’s no worry. But what is going to happen to my life? I’ll move in with my father, a man I barely know. I just wish once that my life would go right. But I wishing is fantasy when I’m living in reality.

Janey raced over towards the building with me in tow. It didn’t take long to reach the club the club but I somehow wanted it to take long. But then again, I’m just having one of those lazy days. No more good, no one will get in the way, mood, just semi-good mood. But I don’t want to burden Janey with me not putting my full potential in this audition.

“Ok,” Janey giggled. “Are you ready?”

“Totally,” I sighed but mentally slapped myself. “Let’s get in there and show them who should be the lead singer in this band.”

“That’s the spirit, Alice!” Janey jumped and stepped forward dragging me. “Here we go!”

“Oh, by the way,” I stopped. “What are they called?”

“They are called ‘Bleeding Black’. I heard there the best group in this place.” She sighed in a girly way. Ok me and girly doesn’t mix but if it wasn’t for her I probably wouldn’t even know what make-up was, except for eyeliner. I can not live without eyeliner.

“Great,” I smiled at her and we continued to walk.

As we opened the door I put on my mask, not a real one. An emotional mask so everyone sees me happy instead of the really me. Except for one person, of course, it was Janey. I cry a lot at night but no in front of others. God forbid I do that, I don’t want other people to feel sorry for me when they have their own problems. Besides it makes me seem weak. So let’s pretend I never said that. I’m a happy person in everyone’s and that’s the way I’m going to stay.

“Yo! Who’s next?” I heard a deep voice. “C’mon we need you to be quick about this.”

“I’m next!” a small girl about three inches shorter than me jumped up from a area crowded with girls. “Ok I’m going to sing…”

“You are going to sing…” a kid about my age said sarcastically. “A song.”

“Yeah,” she giggled. “A song.”

“Do you know Paramore?” another man behind the drums asked.

“Yeah, totally.” She squeaked. “What do they sing again?”

“You have got to be kidding me!” the kid screamed. “Okay if you don’t know Paramore, or any other rock band, than leave!”

About a third of the girls piled out of the room, slowly but loudly. When they left there was only me and six other girls. So seven in total.

“Okay, that’s much better.” The kid sighed.

“Geez Vince,” the drummer laughed. “You showed them.”

“I would like to think so.” Vince said. “Come in here to sing for a rock band and not know any famous rock bands. Why are we having a girl sing for our band?”

“Cause none of us sing good.” The drummer said.

“That’s not true. James sings just fine.” Vince droned.

“I sing fine but not perfect.” I’m assuming he was James, said. “Besides I’m not too big on the singing in front of a lot of people.”

“But you are always in front of a lot of people. Maybe not singing but your still…” Vince was cut off.

“It’s not the same!” James growled.

“Whatever, Jason, pick the next girl.” Vince said to the drummer.

“Alright,” Jason nodded. He scanned us all but stopped in our direction. Then he pointed towards me and Janey. “You girl.” I started walking forward. “Not you, the one behind you.”

I looked back at Janey. She was paralyzed to where she stood. I walked back to her and gave her a nudge. I knew Janey also had the second best voice compared to mine, not that I’m bragging but everyone tells us that. Janey wasn’t budging so I had to push her up to the stage myself and walk back. Before I left her I whispered in her ear, “If your scared than sing it out. Don’t be afraid to sing your feelings out.”

I walked of the stage while looked at Janey. She didn’t look as scared as she did before. Still a little shaken but not scared.

“Okay,” Janey cleared her throat. “I’ll sing Misery Business by Paramore.”

“Now that’s what I’m talking about.” Vince said. “Ready guys?”

“Whenever your ready,” Jason said to Janey.

“I’m ready.” Janey breathed in.

The started to play. They were pretty frickin awesome. Now it’s all up to Janey.

I'm in the business of misery;
let’s take it from the top.
She's got a body like an hour glass; it's ticking like a clock.
It's a matter of time before we all run out;
when I thought he was mine she caught him by the mouth.

I waited eight long months,
she finally set him free.
I told him I couldn't lie he was the only one for me.
Two weeks and we caught on fire,
she’s got it out for me,
but I wear the biggest smile.

Whoa, I never meant to brag
but I got him where I want him now.
Whoa, it was never my intention to brag
to steal it all away from you now.
But God does it feel so good,
Cause I got him where I want him now.
And if you could then you know you would.
It's gonna just feel so...
It just feels so good.

Second chances they don't ever matter, people never change.
Once a whore you're nothing more, I'm sorry, that'll never change.
And about forgiveness, we're both supposed to have exchanged.
I'm sorry honey, but I passed it up, now look this way.
Well there's a million other girls who do it just like you.
Looking as innocent as possible to get to who,
they want and what they like it's easy if you do it right.
Well I refuse, I refuse, I refuse!

Whoa, I never meant to brag
but I got him where I want him now.
Whoa, it was never my intention to brag
to steal it all away from you now.
But God does it feel so good,
Cause I got him where I want him right now.
And if you could then you know you would.
It's gonna just feel so...
It just feels so good.

I watched his wildest dreams come true
Not one of them involving you
Just watch my wildest dreams come true
Not one of them involving...

Whoa, I never meant to brag
but I got him where I want him now.

“Now that’s what I’m talking about.” Vince whooped. “All you other girls go home we found our lead vocalist.”

All the girls got up groaning and complaining about how they didn’t make the band. You know, like Mtv. I was really glad for Janey though, this would be a new experience. Hopefully she does this. I looked at Janey, she was just staring at me like and idiot. I nodded in her direction to tell her to accept it, but I’m guessing she took it the wrong way.

“I won’t do it.” She said.

“You got to be kidding me!” Vince yelled. “Why not?”

“Because I didn’t come here to audition.” She stated simply. “My…”

I raced up to her as fast as I could. “She accepts. She’ll do it.” I covered her mouth. “Don’t believe anything she says because I’m forcing her to do it.”

“We don’t want to force her.” I think his name was James said.

“Ow!” Janey bit me. “That hurt.”

“Good,” she hissed. “I didn’t come here to audition. Alice I dragged you here so you’re going to sing. Your way better than I will ever be.”

“I doubt that, I mean you’re really good.” Vince smiled.

“Yeah, but she,” she pointed to me. “She’s been sing since she was young. Plus she’s always getting solo’s in chorus.

“Only because you force me,” I accused her. “I have no way out of it because you’re so close to the dumb teacher.”

“I do it because you need to express yourself through the art of song or music,” she paused, confused. “Besides every time I see you you’re always singing.”

“But you’re the best we had all day,” Vince complained.

“Vince,” James said. “Just be quiet and let her sing.”

“Fine, this better not waste our time.” Vince said bluntly.

I nodded and nervously walked up to the microphone. I won’t be scared, this is what I’ve wanted since I could think for myself. I wasn’t going to let some stage fright get the best of me. Hell no.

“I’ll sing Miracle by Paramore.” And the music started.
