It’s 2am,

But I can only pretend to be asleep.

I’m crying silently

As I listen to your tears and your pain

I am safe in my bed, but you are not safe in yours

I try not to hear the plates shatter,

Or the doors bang.

I close my eyes and bury myself in pillows;

But still, the threats echo through the walls

I try not to think of the broken bottles decorating the floor

Or the sirens outside our home,

It’s 2am,

But I can only pretend I’m not screaming.
