Unwanted Gifts

Oh joy The tinsel season returns Time for all of us To feel guilty And spend money we don't have To shunt that guilt away Onto others Trying to do the same to us That time we all know Used to have meaning In the dark ages When lights were special Not cheap and multi-colored and blinking Dancing across manicured bushes Like brainwashed robot fireflies Announcing the time of greed and expectation Like the LCD screens in Times Square Did this time once mean something?
We all think it did We sing We pray We buy Of course I'd like Another necklace and earring set Fit for the rosy glass eye Of a pre-teen twat Who hangs love upon the hook Of a ten dollar trinket from down the street He never asked Who are you?
How can I buy your love?
He just bought More fancies for his grown up doll More shinies for the kitten Who was always a cat In kitten's clothing Or a kitten in cat's clothing She herself never knows which Is food in the bowl And a scratch on the head All that it takes To make you love me?
Because only when you love me Does the guilt disappear
