He kept his promise

He kept his promise. She never doubted he would.

She remembers the night they met, the night romance began.

All it took was a glance: a lifetime’s love in one look.

But a lifetime they would never have.

At first, it was like a dream, everything happening at once.

She floated through on waves of passion and he the same.

Yet he never gave all of himself, keeping a secret:

One that would test their bounds.

He told her on a stormy night, then ran into the rain.

She followed, and when he was sure of her love, he made his promise.

“I will always love you,” he said, “no matter what tomorrow brings.”

Tomorrow came too soon.

She watched as they lowered him into the ground,

Remembering the way he looked, in spite of his last tiring months.

For though his sickness had taken him from her, she will forever claim

That he kept his promise, always would.
