The Two Lovers
The Two Lovers
By: Richard Lynch

‘Twas twenty years ago, to date
I held my lover firm.
Our eyes were locked, true disbelief
This night would soon adjourn.
To be together, once again,
That her and I would yearn.
At this time I’m reminded still,
First crossing of our love.
I sat with a book, drinking tea
Her voice came from above.
She asked me if this seat was free,
She sounded like a dove.
Our love was born that very day,
Starting with our first kiss.
She left my place at five past nine,
That moment I felt bliss.
I knew this woman was the one
For whom I must exist.
Since that day we have been as one,
Perhaps the greatest pair.
I love her still, and she loves I,
For love this pure is rare.
I know we’ll be true until death
When I caress each hair.
The time had come, I then declared,
That I should make a move.
The time has come, I say to her,
That we take step and prove
Our love to each, with some distrust,
Of which we must remove.
We ponder what to do just then,
To keep our love as true.
And as I gazed into her eyes,
I just had to construe.
I told her not of what I thought.
It was that time I knew.
I took her hair and held it back
In one long golden strand.
Exposed her neck, and kissed it warm,
I told her what I planned.
I rested her into my arms,
A skein of silk in hand.
I wrapped it twice around her throat
As she let loose a tear.
I promised it’d be over soon,
The end was very near.
She died while lying in my arms,
No more had she to fear.
My lover’s faith was set in stone
The moment she would pass.
Our love took on another form,
That of a higher class.
No others as of now could claim
That our love they surpass.
I don’t regret this that I’ve done,
It was an act of fate.
My lover would no doubt agree
She is my only mate.
And not yet have I met with blame,
Twenty years now, to date.
