The fallen one

The fallen one

Chapter 1

Zerat wasn’t a god, though to tell any mortal that would lead to great doubt in the statement. Zerat was immortal, and anything but human. Though he was divine, he was no god, and would never be one. A tool, that’s all he was, a tool of the gods, the bringer of death and judgment. For thousands of years he had walked the earth, from the great city of Hetar to the small villa of Typor. The Kingdom of Hishtay, to the Detran Empire. He had done his job well, staying faithful to his creators, though he was created by the god known to the mortals as Gigas, the god of war and death, he was the tool of the god Retrain, keeper of the underworld. When Retrain grew angry at Gigas for the constant death rate, the Queen of the gods, Veris, ordered her husband, Mephalis, to find a way to fix it, for a war among gods would only stand to harm her children, none other than man. Mephalis came to a decision quickly, and told Retrain that he would find a minion to aid him. He ordered Gigas to create one for Retrain, and so Zerat was born into existence. Zerat followed his master faithfully, shepherding the dead to their place in the underworld. After two generations, the inevitable happened. A cold war among gods, all trying to gain power. A plot was mad by Gigas, and his brother, the god of famine, Titus, to kill Mephalis, and take his place as king of the gods. Fortunately, Gigas’s own minion, the death bringer known as Shitar, learned of this plot, and fought against Gigas and Titus. The immortal was no match for the gods, and fell quickly. But as Titus and Gigas turned to leave, Shitar was resurrected by Mephalis, who had learned of their plan as well, and with the power of the king of the gods on his side, Shitar fought again. The fight lasted one thousand years, but at the end, Shitar stood in victory. As a reward, Shitar was made the god of war and famine. As for death, that was passed onto Retrain, who soon realized that he’d be unable to monitor everything, so he gave the duty to Zerat to go to the mortal plain, and harvest the dead for him. And so he had, for what seemed like a millennium, harvested souls for Retrain, but the last laugh would be of Gigas, who’s treachery would so be revealed. For when Gigas had been ordered to create Zerat, he had become angry, for Retrain could of just as easily had done it, but he did as he was ordered, but he included a flaw, to get back at Retrain, he had given Zerat a conscience. He had given him Emotion. He hadn’t created a tool, but an entire new being.
