Chapter 5
Zerat returned to the cavern the next day, five souls following him. They saddened him; they would all be taking the golden way. Bandits had attacked a monk monastery and no one had survived. He led them up to desk, and leaned against.
“Hey Seira,
I got five for you today.”
“Zerat? Wow, I had heard you were
developing emotions, but I never believed that it was true.”
“Yeah,
it’s actually not that bad, seeing that I don’t get banished from
existence for it.”
“I’m sure they won’t do that, you’ve
been too good to Retrain for him to actually just throw you away.
You’re the best harbinger in all of history.”
“Yeah, I guess. Well, anyway, you’d better get going on these guys.”
He went and sat down in his usual spot while Seira registered the former monks into the archive and then he led them to the door. When he returned to the cavern, he found a surprise waiting for him.
“Hello Zerat.”
“Shitar! What are you doing here?”
“The gods have decided to let you continue your work, but you’ll be under constant surveillance.”
“I understand, thank you Shitar”
“Actually,
I have another thing to say. We still haven’t replaced Titus, so if
you keep up the good work, I may actually find a replacement for him
in an unlikely place.”
“Oh! Thank you sir!”
The god approached him, and placed a hand on Zerat’s shoulder.
“I’ve always liked you Zerat, you remind me of me… except the whole skinless thing, heh heh.”
“Well, can’t help the way I was created.”
“Well, not yet at least, but gods can do many things, so as I said, keep it up, and if I were you, I’d avoid Retrain.”
“Why is that sir?”
“Well, he was against letting you continue, but not to worry, most of us support you.”
And with a burst of flames, he vanished. So had Zerat’s cheerful mood, all he felt now was… Rage.
